IIT Bombay & Honeywell’s Centre of Excellence to Train 100,000 Students by 2030
IITB and Honeywell announce the launch of Centre of Excellence in Powai Campus. The project aims to train 100,000 students for sustainability related professions by 2030.
Honeywell and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay announced a new Centre of Excellence (CoE) in the latter’s Powai campus on March 9th,2026. The upcoming centre aims to train over 100,000 students in sustainability related fields by 2030 through various certificate courses. Honeywell is a major multinational tech and manufacturing conglomerate. Its philanthropic arm, Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation, will fully fund the new project, officially called the IIT Bombay–Honeywell Centre of Excellence for Future Skills and Innovation, funded fully by Honeywell.
Courses Offered Under This Programme

Sustainability related training and education at this new centre will be offered via certificate-based programmes. These courses will be open to undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral students. Education through these courses will be imparted in a mix of coursework and hands-on practical methods. The centre will feature advanced infrastructure, including lab equipment, research and innovation facilities and more.
These upcoming certificate courses will focus on 5 main tracks, combining a total of 40 hours of learning:
- Sustainability reporting
- Sustainable finance
- Energy security
- Sustainability infrastructure
- Policy advocacy
The first batch will feature a cohort of nearly 250 students. There will be a strong emphasis on combining classroom and practical learning, to give students exposure to real-world sustainability challenges.
When Can You Enrol?
The IIT Bombay- Honeywell collaboration is currently in its pilot phase for the next two months. This phase will focus on building the infrastructure, designing the curriculum and successfully training the first cohort of 250 students. Once the pilot phase is complete, the centre of excellence will aim to train 20,000 students every year.
While the official dates have not been out, experts believe that the enrollment for the pilot phase should begin soon.
Rising Demand for Sustainability Professionals
The new announcement comes at a time when the demand for sustainability-trained professionals is on the rise, while the supply in India is at a low.The renewable energy industry is expected to face a shortage of 1.7 million skilled professionals by 2030. The global demand for green talent is reported to increase by 11.6% from 2023-2024. According to the Economic Survey 2023-24, India aims to add 3-4 million jobs in the green sector by 2030. The new initiative comes amidst this backdrop of a need to develop more green workforce.Further, due to this shortage, professionals with sustainability skills are more likely to be hired than the average worker.
Ashish Modi, India and Asia Pacific President at Honeywell, remarked that developing skilled talent is crucial for building a sustainable economy that’s ready for the future. While IIT-B director Prof Shireesh B Kedare commented, “The new centre will help students gain practical learning experience and work on real-world sustainability challenges that are important for the country’s future.”
