Marks to Be Awarded for Each Correct Step in Maths & Science: CBSE Answers This and Other Questions

CBSE 10th board exams and CBSE class 12th board exams both began on 17th February 2026. During the exam season, and due to several changes introduced by the New Education Policy (NEP), students and parents are facing multiple doubts. Sanyan Bhardwaj, CBSE Controller of Examinations, clarifies some popular doubts and confusions below in her responses.

Will there be marks for correct steps in Maths and Science?

Yes, students will be awarded marks for each correct step in Maths and Science, even if the final answer is incorrect. The idea behind this approach is to reward the conceptual understanding and correct approach showcased by students. 

Are gel pens or whiteners allowed in CBSE board exams?

Students are advised to use only ball point pens for CBSE board exams. Candidates are also encouraged to cross out mistakes neatly using single lines instead of applying whiteners. Further, the board advises using ink pens for longer life so the ink does not fade away. The ink must not mark or identify an answer book. Any such identification may lead to the student being booked under unfair means.

Are there extra marks for neat handwriting?

No extra marks are rewarded for correct answers. A neat presentation of answers, however, does reduce chances of misinterpretation on part of the checker. 

How is CBSE responding to concerns that competency-based questions are making exams more difficult?

CBSE is gradually introducing competency-based questions in line with NEP 2020. But their proportion has been kept balanced to avoid overburdening students. These questions focus on application and understanding rather than rote learning. Over the years, their share has increased step by step. Especially in the past two years, 50% of the questions in both Class X and XII exams have been competency-based. Students are informed about such changes at the start of the academic session so they can prepare accordingly, and CBSE also releases sample question papers.

What sample papers, training resources, or teacher programmes will CBSE offer to help students adjust?

Teacher training is done by CBSE through orientations and webinars conducted at schools and other venues. For students, the board regularly releases sample papers, regulations, marking schemes and training modules on the official website.
