MP Board Ends “Supplementary” Stigma: Second Main Exam to Debut This May
The MP Board has replaced supplementary exams with a "Second Main Attempt" starting May 7, 2026, to remove the stigma of failure and allow students to improve marks. This new system ensures students receive a clean marksheet without any "supplementary" labels, helping them save an academic year and reduce stress
In a landmark move to reform the state’s education system, the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) has officially abolished the traditional “supplementary” examination system.
Starting with the 2025-26 academic session, students will no longer carry the weight of a “Supplementary” tag on their marksheet. Instead, they will be given a chance to appear for a “Second Main Examination.”
This change isn’t just a rebranding exercise; it is a major policy shift designed to reduce student stress and align the state’s evaluation process with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
What Changes for Class 10 and 12 Students?
Under the old system, if a student failed in one or two subjects, they had to sit for a “Supplementary Exam.” The result would explicitly mention “Passed via Supplementary,” which often carried a social stigma and created hurdles during college admissions.
The New Rules at a Glance:
-
Abolition of Stigma: The word “Supplementary” will be removed from all documents. The new marksheet will look identical to a regular main exam result.
-
Open to All: Unlike the previous system which was mostly for those who failed, the Second Main Exam is also open to students who passed but are unhappy with their scores and wish to improve them.
-
Dual Opportunity: Students now essentially get two “main” chances within a single academic year to prove their merit.
Important Dates for 2026
The MP Board has moved swiftly to implement this. Following the first main exams held in February and March, the schedule for the second attempt has already been finalized:
| Category | Start Date | End Date |
| Class 10th (High School) | May 7, 2026 | May 19, 2026 |
| Class 12th (Higher Secondary) | May 7, 2026 | May 25, 2026 |
| Practical Exams | May 5, 2026 | May 25, 2026 |
Students will need to apply through the MP Online portal within seven days of the first main exam results being declared.
Why the Board Made This Move?
The primary goal is to lower the dropout rate. Many students in Madhya Pradesh who were marked for “Supplementary” felt discouraged and often discontinued their studies. By treating the second attempt as a “Main Exam,” the board provides a psychological boost, treating the second chance as a regular part of the academic calendar rather than a “re-test for failures.”
Furthermore, this system ensures that students do not lose an entire year. The results for the second main exam are expected to be processed rapidly, allowing students to secure college admissions in the same cycle as their peers
How the Exam Will Work?
The pattern, syllabus, and difficulty level of the Second Main Exam will remain exactly the same as the first attempt.
-
Shift Timings: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
-
Reporting Time: Students must arrive at the center by 8:30 AM.
-
Scoring: For those appearing for improvement, the best of the two scores is typically considered for the final certificate, though students should check specific subject-wise eligibility on the MPBSE portal.
A Step Toward Modern Education
Education experts have hailed this as a “student-centric” reform. By providing a safety net that doesn’t feel like a punishment, the MP Board is fostering a healthier competitive environment. It acknowledges that one bad day during a February exam shouldn’t define a student’s entire future.
