NCERT Class 9 English Syllabus 2026 Revised: New Textbook To Feature Sudha Murty and Tagore
NCERT has revised the Class 9 English syllabus, replacing two textbooks with a single new book titled Kaveri. The updated curriculum includes works by Sudha Murty, Rabindranath Tagore, and other Indian and international authors.The change aligns with NEP 2020 and reduces the number of texts to simplify the syllabus for students.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has revised the NCERT Class 9 English syllabus 2026. They have introduced a new textbook titled ‘Kaveri’. The existing textbooks Beehive and Moments will be replaced with this book. This is expected to be implemented from the new academic session 2026-27.
As the syllabus changes this year, the number of prescribed texts has been reduced significantly for Class 9 English syllabus. The previous book contained 29 texts across two books and the revised book consists of 16 texts in a single book. This makes the curriculum streamlined and in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.
NCERT Class 9 English New Textbook Kaveri to Highlight Indian Authors
The NCERT Class 9 English new textbook Kaveri opens with a story from How I Taught My Grandmother to Read and Other Stories by author and Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty. The story narrates the experience of a grandmother who learns to read later in life, emphasizing the importance of education and independence.
Apart from Murty’s work, the NCERT Class 9 English syllabus 2026-27 includes writings from several prominent Indian authors such as Rabindranath Tagore, Subramania Bharati, Temsula Ao, and Mitra Phukan. These texts aim to introduce students to diverse perspectives reflecting Indian culture, society, and human values.
The textbook also features works by international writers including David Roth, Charles Swain, Bryanna T. Perkins, Robert Langley, Maya Anthony, and Irene Chua, ensuring a balance between Indian and global literary voices.
Major Changes in NCERT Class 9 English Syllabus 2026
One of the most significant Class 9 English syllabus changes 2026 is the restructuring of the reading list. Out of the 29 texts included in the previous books Beehive and Moments, 28 have been replaced in the revised syllabus.
Only the well-known short story “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry has been retained in the NCERT Class 9 English new syllabus.
The updated textbook also introduces several new readings, including:

These additions aim to make the NCERT Class 9 English syllabus more contemporary and relatable.
Focus on Contemporary Themes and Indian Knowledge Systems
According to officials, the NCERT Class 9 English textbook Kaveri integrates elements of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) and includes themes related to society, environment, ethics, science, technology, and human relationships.
The new curriculum is designed to make learning more engaging while aligning with the broader educational goals outlined under NEP 2020.
Reports suggest that the textbook has already appeared on some online retail platforms, though the official NCERT Class 9 English textbook PDF has not yet been uploaded on the NCERT website.
Transition to the Revised NCERT Curriculum
The NCERT Class 9 English syllabus 2026-27 will gradually replace the earlier textbooks that had been used in schools since the 2006–07 academic session.
With the introduction of the NCERT Class 9 English new textbook Kaveri, the revised curriculum aims to simplify the syllabus while providing students with exposure to both Indian and international literary traditions.
