The National Testing Agency (NTA) has initiated the application process for the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) December 2026. Interested and eligible candidates are required to submit their registration forms by October 28, 2026, to avoid any late fees. This examination serves to determine eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professorship, or admission to PhD programmes across Indian Universities and Colleges.
The UGC NET is conducted twice annually, in June and December, by the NTA to regularise the examination cycle. The December 2026 examination will be administered in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode, covering a total of 87 subjects. Candidates are required to select four cities of their choice during the application process, preferably within their current or permanent address state.
UGC NET December 2026 Application and Examination Details
The NTA, entrusted by the University Grants Commission (UGC), conducts the UGC-NET to assess the eligibility of Indian nationals for various academic roles. The examination has been conducted in CBT mode since December 2018. Candidates’ eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship and/or Assistant Professorship is determined by their aggregate performance in both Paper-I and Paper-II of the UGC-NET. Those who qualify solely for Assistant Professorship are not eligible for JRF.
While efforts will be made to allot examination cities based on candidate preferences, the NTA reserves the right to allot a different city due to administrative or logistic reasons. The decision made by the NTA regarding the allotment of the exam city and centre will be considered final. The official Information Bulletin, specifically Annexure III, provides the complete list of examination cities for UGC NET December 2026.
Maharashtra Examination Centres for UGC NET December 2026
For candidates applying from Maharashtra, the NTA has released a full list of examination cities. These cities span across various regions of the state, aiming to provide accessibility for a wide number of applicants. In situations where there are very few candidates from a particular city, the NTA retains the right to merge one, two, or more cities for examination purposes.
The exam city intimation slip release date for UGC NET December 2026 has not yet been announced. The e-Admit Card, once released, will contain the actual examination date, shift, and the specific address of the allotted exam centre. Candidates are advised to regularly check the official website, ugcnet.nta.ac.in, for updates regarding these releases.
