Tirunelveli Tops Tamil Nadu Again in NMMS Exam 2026; 659 Students Qualify
Tirunelveli district has secured the top rank in Tamil Nadu in the NMMS exam once again, with 659 students qualifying this year. Officials credited special coaching, structured preparation, and coordinated efforts by teachers for the district’s strong performance.
Tirunelveli district (also known as Nellai) has emerged as the topper district of Tamil Nadu in National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) exam 2026 with 659 students getting the scholarship.
Education department officials have said that out of 4,999 Class 8 students appeared in NMMS exam Tamil Nadu 2026 in the district out of which 659 students were cleared with pass percentage of almost 13%.
The performance has enabled Tirunelveli to maintain its rank as one of the top performing districts of Tamil Nadu NMMS result 2026.
Tirunelveli Retains Top Rank in NMMS Result
Officials confirmed that Tirunelveli has retained the first position in the NMMS scholarship exam Tamil Nadu for the second consecutive year.
The district has recorded a steady rise in the number of students qualifying for the NMMS scholarship for Class 8 students over the past three years.

This year’s NMMS result 2026 Tamil Nadu shows nearly a 30% increase compared to last year, reflecting better academic support and preparation in government schools.
Tenkasi Secures Second Place
On one hand, Tirunelveli topped the NMMS exam Tamil Nadu and on the other hand, Tenkasi, a neighbouring district, has secured the second position with 424 students qualifying for the scholarship examination.
According to the officials, around 6,695 students were selected in the Tamil Nadu NMMS selection list 2026, and approximately 10% of them are from Tirunelveli district, which highlights the region’s great performance.
Special Coaching Boosted NMMS Success
M. Sivakumar, Chief Educational Officer, attributed the district’s success in the NMMS scholarship exam in Tamil Nadu to systematic preparation and strong academic support provided to students.
Education authorities stated that a district-level coordination team prepared weekly study schedules and organised special coaching classes and mock tests in schools to help students prepare for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) examination.
Teachers, coordinators, and school principals also played an important role in guiding students throughout the preparation process.
About the NMMS Scholarship
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Examination (NMMS) is conducted to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections.
Students who qualify in the NMMS scholarship exam 2026 receive ₹1,000 per month as financial assistance from the central government for four years, helping them continue their education from Class 9 to Class 12.
The scholarship programme aims to reduce dropout rates after Class 8 and encourage students to pursue higher education.
