The Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, is expected to release the NIRF Ranking 2026 in the third quarter of 2026, roughly between July and September. While no official date has been announced yet, the annual ranking framework will evaluate institutions of higher education across India, providing crucial insights for students and stakeholders.
This year’s rankings will encompass 17 distinct categories, building on the framework launched by the Honourable Minister for Education on September 29, 2015. NIRF 2026: Ranking Parameters and Categories
NIRF 2026 will rank institutions across 17 categories, using five core parameters for evaluation. These parameters include Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception (PR). Each parameter carries specific weightage, contributing to the overall score and subsequent ranking of an institution.
Building on previous iterations, NIRF 2025 introduced notable changes that are expected to continue influencing the 2026 rankings. These included negative marking for retracted research papers and self-citations under the Research and Professional Practice (RP) parameter, aiming to enhance the integrity of research output. Also, a new Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) category was introduced in NIRF 2025, reflecting a growing global and national concentrate on sustainability in education.

The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, secured the top spot in the Universities category, while IIM Ahmedabad led the Management category. AIIMS New Delhi was recognized as the premier institution in the Medical category, highlighting its excellence in healthcare education and research.
