About Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU), formerly known as Andhra Pradesh Open University (APOU), is a public state open university located in Hyderabad, Telangana. Established on 26th August 1982 through an Act of the Andhra Pradesh State Legislature (APOU Act 1982), it was the first open university in India.

The university was renamed as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University on 26th October 1991 in honor of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. Prof. G. Ram Reddy was the founder and first Vice-Chancellor of the university. The university is recognized by UGC and accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ grade.
