About Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU), formerly known as Andhra Pradesh Open University (APOU), is a public state open university located in Hyderabad, Telangana. Established on 26th August 1982 through an Act of the Andhra Pradesh State Legislature (APOU Act 1982), it was the first open university in India.
The university was renamed as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University on 26th October 1991 in honor of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. Prof. G. Ram Reddy was the founder and first Vice-Chancellor of the university. The university is recognized by UGC and accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ grade.
BRAOU operates through an extensive network of 213 study centres spread across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states, including 23 Regional Coordination Centres and 14 exclusive centres for women students. The university follows a multi-media teaching-learning approach comprising self-learning print material, audio-video lessons, and broadcast through All India Radio and Doordarshan.
With the motto “Education at Your Doorstep,” BRAOU provides flexible higher education opportunities to working professionals, women, socially disadvantaged groups, and geographically isolated people. The university produces approximately 70,000 graduates annually and has been ranked 3rd among Open Universities by NIRF 2024.
