Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU), popularly known as HAU, is one of Asia’s biggest agricultural universities located at Hisar in Haryana. Named after India’s 7th Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, the university was established on 2 February 1970 through the Haryana and Punjab Agricultural Universities Act, 1970. It was renamed as CCSHAU on 31 October 1991.
The university was initially a campus of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. After the formation of Haryana in 1966, it became an autonomous institution. A. L. Fletcher served as the first Vice-Chancellor. CCSHAU played a pivotal role in India’s Green Revolution and White Revolution during the 1960s and 70s.
CCSHAU is spread over a massive area of 7219 acres at the main campus in Hisar and 1426 acres at outstations. The university won the prestigious Indian Council of Agricultural Research’s Award for the Best Institute in 1997 and 2017. In 2024, it was awarded ‘A+’ grade by NAEAB-ICAR accreditation and ranked 7th in India in Agriculture and Allied Sectors by NIRF.
The university offers undergraduate programmes in 9 disciplines including Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Agri-Business Management, Community Science, Fisheries, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Biotechnology.
