About Kazi Nazrul University
Kazi Nazrul University (KNU) is a public state research university located in Asansol, Paschim Bardhaman district, West Bengal, India. The university was established under the Kazi Nazrul University Act, 2012 (West Bengal Act XIX of 2012) and has been named after the renowned Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, who is also the national poet of Bangladesh. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone of the university on 10th January 2013.
The university was set up to promote teaching and research in Asansol and its adjoining areas in the Bardhaman district. Over time, it has grown to have 19 departments organized into four faculty councils with state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities. The main campus is located at Churulia, about 31 kilometers from Asansol city, covering 15.6 acres with infrastructure built on 14,598.37 square meters.
In July 2019, the university was given membership of the Association of Indian Universities. The University Grants Commission (UGC) accorded recognition to the university under Section 12B of the UGC Act in 2019. In September 2021, the university was awarded NAAC Grade B with a CGPA of 2.1. Kazi Nazrul University was ranked 65th among academic institutions in India by the Nature Index in 2023.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil, and Ph.D programs across various disciplines including Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Law, Engineering (through School of Mines and Metallurgy), and Allied Health Sciences. In 2016, the Institute for Mines, Minerals and Metallurgic Sciences was established under the university, offering Diploma, B.Tech, M.Sc, and Ph.D programs in mining and metallurgical engineering.
The Central Library of Kazi Nazrul University was established in 2013 with a valuable collection of more than 20,000 books covering various subjects. The entire campus is Wi-Fi enabled with four smart classrooms. In 2023, the university signed an agreement with Taylor’s University from Malaysia for research and faculty exchange programs. The university also houses the Nazrul Research Centre established in 2015 to honor the legacy of the poet.
