The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are premier autonomous public technical universities. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. Admission to their undergraduate programs is through the highly competitive JEE Advanced examination.
01Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, West BengalUG seats ~1,500
Established in 1951, IIT Kharagpur is located in West Bengal. It was the first IIT to be founded in India. Admission to its undergraduate programs is through JEE Advanced.
02Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, MaharashtraUG seats ~1,200
IIT Bombay was established in 1958 in Powai, Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. Undergraduate admissions are based on JEE Advanced ranks and subsequent counselling processes.
03Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Tamil NaduUG seats ~900
Founded in 1959, IIT Madras is situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, within a large forested campus. It operates as an autonomous public technical university under the Ministry of Education. Entry to its B.Tech programs requires a valid JEE Advanced score and subsequent counselling.
04Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Uttar PradeshUG seats ~900
IIT Kanpur was established in 1959 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, with assistance from a consortium of US universities. It is one of the premier engineering institutions in India. JEE Advanced scores determine undergraduate admissions for all its B.Tech courses.

06Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, AssamUG seats ~900
IIT Guwahati was established in 1994 in North Guwahati, Assam, along the Brahmaputra River. It is recognized as a public technical university by the Government of India. Admission to its undergraduate courses is via JEE Advanced and the JoSAA counselling process.
07Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, UttarakhandUG seats ~1,200
IIT Roorkee, located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, was established in 1847 as Thomson College of Civil Engineering. It was converted into an Indian Institute of Technology in 2001. Undergraduate admissions are conducted through JEE Advanced and subsequent JoSAA counselling.
