Delhi University election results 2026: ABVP wins 3 posts, independent makes history

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has secured three of the four central panel positions in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections 2026, with an independent candidate making history by winning one of the remaining posts. The results were declared on Saturday, September 19, 2026, following elections held on Friday, September 18, 2026.

The DUSU elections, contested by 20 candidates for the four central posts of president, vice-president, secretary, and joint secretary, are considered a significant indicator of student political sentiment in one of the country’s most prominent student representative bodies. The voter turnout on Friday was recorded at 40.46 percent.

ABVP’s Dominance and Independent’s Historic Win

The ABVP demonstrated a strong performance, winning three key central panel positions. ABVP candidate Ankit Bidhan secured the presidential election with 3,149 votes. The party had fielded Yash Dabas for president, Ishu Maurya for vice-president, Riya Chhawadi for secretary, and Lakshya Raj Singh for joint secretary. While the specific posts won by the ABVP were not detailed beyond the presidency, the overall outcome indicates a significant victory for the organisation.

In a notable development, an independent candidate secured one of the four central panel positions, marking a historic achievement in the DUSU elections. This outcome contrasts with the performance of other student political alliances, such as the AISA-SFI alliance, whose candidates for vice-president and joint secretary received fewer votes than the ‘None Of The Above’ (NOTA) option.

Vote Counting and Candidate Performance

Counting of votes for the DUSU elections commenced at 8 am on Saturday, September 19, at the Multipurpose Hall of the University Sports Stadium in North Campus. The elections saw a total of 20 candidates vying for the four central posts. Voting for day-college students took place from 8:30 am to 1 pm on Friday, while evening students cast their votes between 3 pm and 7:30 pm.

Beyond the ABVP’s wins, the election results also highlighted the performance of other candidates and the NOTA option. The AISA-SFI alliance’s presidential candidate, Ananya Raturi, polled 5,377 votes, while NOTA received 4,310 votes for the same post. For the secretary’s contest, AISA-SFI’s Stanzin Deskyong secured 8,734 votes, with NOTA receiving 7,884 votes. In the vice-president contest, AISA-SFI candidate Akshat Shikhar polled 2,383 votes, significantly less than the 4,359 votes received by NOTA. Similarly, for joint secretary, B Parijaat of AISA-SFI secured 5,837 votes, compared to 7,389 votes for NOTA.

Court Directives and Campaign Context

The Delhi High Court issued directives prohibiting victory processions, drums, and other celebratory displays following the announcement of the DUSU election results on September 19, 2026. The court had previously questioned police regarding large election cavalcades and vehicles operating without number plates during the campaign period. All parties involved have been directed to file their responses within two weeks, with the next hearing fixed for November 6.

The election campaign addressed various student issues, including safety, accommodation, and campus facilities. A significant point of discussion during the campaign was the collapse of a five-storey building housing a boys’ PG in south Delhi’s Satya Niketan, which resulted in seven fatalities, including students. The DUSU, established in 1949, represents over 700,000 students across 91 affiliated colleges and 16 faculties, making its elections a significant event often referred to as a “mini theatre of national politics.”
