Prospective MBA and PGDM students in India are currently navigating the distinctions between the Common Admission Test (CAT) and the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) for admissions in the 2026 academic cycle. These two national-level entrance examinations, conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and the National Testing Agency (NTA) respectively, serve as gateways to various management institutions across the country.
While both exams aim to assess candidates for postgraduate management studies, they differ in their conducting bodies, exam patterns, syllabus, and the range of institutions that accept their scores. CAT is typically held in November, with CMAT following in January or February, allowing many aspirants to attempt both examinations.
Exam Structure and Difficulty Levels
The structure of CAT and CMAT presents notable differences. CAT, conducted by the IIMs, comprises three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). It includes 68 questions in total, with a mix of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Type In The Answer (TITA) questions. The exam has a duration of 120 minutes (2 hours), with a strict 40-minute sectional time limit for each section. TITA questions in CAT do not carry negative marking.
In contrast, CMAT, administered by the NTA on behalf of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), features five sections: Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, General Awareness, and Innovation & Entrepreneurship. CMAT is entirely MCQ-based, consists of 100 questions, and has a total duration of 180 minutes (3 hours) without any sectional time limits. CAT is widely considered to be more challenging than CMAT.
| Exam Sections | Total Questions | Number of MCQ Questions | Number of TITA Questions | Section-wise Time Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VARC | 24 | 19 | 5 | 40 |
| DILR | 20 | 15 | 5 | 40 |
| QA | 22 | 14 | 8 | 40 |
| Total | 66 | 48 | 18 | 120 |
| Type of questions | No. of questions | Maximum Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation | 20 | 80 |
| Logical Reasoning | 20 | 80 |
| Language Comprehension | 20 | 80 |
| General Awareness | 20 | 80 |
| Innovation & Entrepreneurship | 20 | 80 |
| Total | 100 | 400 |
Scoring and Syllabus Variations
The marking schemes for CAT and CMAT also differ. In CAT, candidates receive 3 marks for each correct MCQ response, with a 33% negative marking for incorrect MCQs. For CMAT, 4 marks are awarded for each correct answer, and there is a 25% negative marking for wrong responses. Both examinations are conducted once a year.
Regarding the syllabus, both exams cover core management aptitude areas such as Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Data Interpretation. However, CMAT uniquely includes sections on General Awareness and Innovation & Entrepreneurship, which are not part of the CAT syllabus. This necessitates additional preparation for aspirants opting for CMAT after preparing for CAT.

CMAT scores, but then, are accepted by thousands of AICTE-approved institutes, university departments, and autonomous B-schools throughout India. The official website for CMAT is cmat.nta.nic.in.
