About The University of Burdwan
The University of Burdwan (also known as Burdwan University or BU) is a public state university located in Purba Bardhaman district, West Bengal, India. It was established by the West Bengal Government on 15th June 1960 as a teaching and affiliating university under West Bengal Act XXIX of 1959.
The university has a unique royal heritage – it is housed in the erstwhile royal estate of the Burdwan Raj. The administrative centre is located in Mahtab Manzil (Rajbati), once the royal palace of the Maharaja of Burdwan, which was handed over to the West Bengal Government by the last King of Burdwan Princely State, Maharajadhiraja Bahadur Uday Chand Mahtab, after the abolition of the Zamindari system in 1955.
Burdwan University has grown to become the second largest state university in West Bengal after the University of Calcutta. The university currently has 39 postgraduate departments, over 74 affiliated colleges, and offers more than 30 undergraduate and 66 postgraduate courses across various disciplines.
The university has been consistently ranked among the top 100 universities in India by NIRF, securing ranks of 87 (2022), 85 (2021), 92 (2020), and 89 (2019). It is accredited with ‘A’ Grade by NAAC and ranks 125th in QS Asian University Rankings (South Asia) 2024.
