IIT Bombay, Honeywell to set up centre of excellence for sustainability skills; offer certificate programmes
IIT Bombay, Honeywell Launch Centre of Excellence for Future Sustainability Skills
IIT Bombay and global technology leader Honeywell have partnered to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for sustainability skills. This new centre, located at IIT Bombay’s Powai campus, aims to train over 100,000 students in sustainability-related fields by 2030. The initiative marks a significant step in industry-academia collaboration for India’s green economy.
IIT Bombay-Honeywell CoE: A New Hub for Green Skills
The ‘IIT Bombay–Honeywell Centre of Excellence for Future Skills and Innovation’ will drive sustainability education. Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation (HHSIF), Honeywell’s philanthropic arm, fully funds its creation. The CoE will strengthen India’s workforce for the growing green technology sector.
This collaboration supports advanced laboratory infrastructure and equipment procurement. IT also includes curriculum design and research grants. The centre’s objective is to develop practical skills across various sustainability practices.
Training 100,000 Students by 2030: The Ambitious Target
The CoE targets training more than 100,000 students in sustainability fields by 2030. This ambitious goal aligns with India’s transition towards a green economy. The Economic Survey 2023–24 projects 3.4 million green sector jobs by 2030 (Source: Economic Survey 2023–24).
Following a pilot phase, the centre expects to engage approximately 20,000 students annually. This will create a strong pipeline of sustainability professionals. These professionals will possess critical cross-disciplinary and technology-driven skills.
Certificate Programmes and Key Learning Tracks
The Centre of Excellence will offer Certificate-based programmes. These programmes combine rigorous coursework with hands-on projects. Students will address real-world sustainability challenges through practical application.
Programmes are open to undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students nationwide. The curriculum focuses on five learning tracks. These tracks cover critical areas for future sustainability leaders.
| Learning Track | Focus Area |
|---|---|
| Sustainability Reporting | Measuring and communicating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. |
