The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) has invited applications for its Graduate School (GS) Admissions for the 2026 academic year. The entrance examination for these programmes, including MSc, PhD, and Integrated M.Sc. PhD Degree Programmes, is scheduled for December 14, 2025.

The application process requires candidates to complete a new registration, fill in basic details, and then proceed with the full application after receiving login credentials via SMS and email. The TIFR GS exam will be conducted in two sessions: morning and afternoon, with each exam lasting three hours, irrespective of the chosen subject.

TIFR Gs 2026 Chemistry Exam Structure

The TIFR GS 2026 Chemistry exam will consist of a single section comprising 40 multiple-choice questions. Each correct answer will be awarded 3 marks, while an incorrect answer will lead to a deduction of 1 mark. This structure differs from the TIFR GS 2025 exam, which included multiple-choice questions, subjective questions, and true-false statements depending on the subject, and generally applied negative marking for most subjects.

For comparison, the TIFR GS 2025 Biology Exam, also known as the Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences, had a different pattern. Section A of the Biology exam contained 10 multiple-choice questions, each earning 1 mark for a correct answer. Section B had 5 multiple-choice questions, with each correct answer fetching 2 marks. Incorrect answers in the Biology exam resulted in a negative marking of -1 mark each.

Section Question Type Total Questions Marks per Correct Answer Negative Marking per Incorrect Answer
One section Multiple-choice questions 40 3 1

Fellowships and Provisional Admissions

Students admitted to PhD programmes will receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 37,000, which will be enhanced to Rs 42,000 after registration, along with hostel accommodation or House Rent Allowance (HRA) as applicable. Integrated PhD (I-PhD) students will receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 25,000 for the first year. Following satisfactory performance at the end of the first year, this fellowship will increase to Rs 37,000 per month, further rising to Rs 42,000 after registration for the PhD component.

If an I-PhD student opts for the MSc exit option, the fellowship for the third year will be reduced to the first-year amount. All admitted students must submit a provisional or final degree certificate as proof of having passed the qualifying examination by the end of the first academic year. Students currently in their final year of a qualifying degree are also eligible to apply. Provisional admission is possible if proof of passing the qualifying examination is awaited, provided a certificate from the Head of the previous Department or Institution is submitted. Fellowship for provisionally admitted students will be paid with arrears once the required certificate is submitted. Provisional admission will be terminated if the proof document is not submitted by the end of the first academic year, though extensions may be granted at the discretion of the Director TIFR or Centre Director.
