Answer first: A basic B.Sc Nursing course cannot be done through distance or online mode in India. The Indian Nursing Council (INC) and UGC allow B.Sc Nursing only as a full-time, on-campus programme because it needs supervised clinical and patient-care training. The only INC-recognised distance-mode nursing degree is the Post Basic B.Sc Nursing offered by IGNOU, and it is open only to already-registered nurses (RNRM/GNM), not to fresh Class 12 students. If you have just finished 12th, you must join a regular full-time B.Sc Nursing programme through NEET.
Can You Do B.Sc Nursing in Distance or Online Mode?
No. Basic B.Sc Nursing is a clinical, practice-heavy degree, so it is not permitted in distance or online mode anywhere in India. Both the Indian Nursing Council (the regulator for nursing education) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) require it to be studied as a four-year, full-time, on-campus programme with mandatory hospital postings. Any institute advertising a “distance B.Sc Nursing” or “online B.Sc Nursing” for fresh 12th-pass students is offering a degree that will not be valid for nursing registration or jobs in government or private hospitals.

The Only Recognised Distance Option: IGNOU Post Basic B.Sc Nursing
The single INC-approved distance nursing degree in India is the Post Basic B.Sc Nursing (BSCN(PB)) from IGNOU. It lets an in-service Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife (RNRM) who already holds a 3-year GNM diploma upgrade to a bachelor’s degree through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) model. Theory is delivered by distance, but practicals and counselling are compulsory and must be completed at INC-approved study centres.
In short: it is a bridge course for working nurses, not an entry-level nursing degree. A student straight out of school cannot enrol in it.

You are eligible only if you are already a qualified, registered nurse. There are two accepted pathways, and both require a valid RNRM registration plus a 3-year GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) diploma.

Male nurses who do not have midwifery training must additionally hold a 6–9 month certificate in an INC-prescribed nursing course. There is no separate national entrance exam for this IGNOU programme; admission is based on eligibility verification through the SAMARTH portal.
What If You Have Just Finished Class 12?
If you are a fresher, distance mode is not an option — you must take a regular full-time B.Sc Nursing programme, and admission is through a national or state entrance exam or Class 12 merit.
