CAT 2026 IIM Call Chances for General Male Engineers and Low Academic Scores
A general-category male engineer with average Class 10 and 12 marks can still get IIM interview calls, but a high CAT percentile alone does not guarantee them. Most top IIMs shortlist on a composite score in which CAT carries roughly 50–65% of the weight and past academics, work experience and diversity points make up the rest. A 99 percentile therefore pulls you a long way, and where it falls short depends on which IIM you are looking at.
This guide reads the official admission policies of six top IIMs and shows where a profile like this loses points and where it can recover them. Weights are quoted only from the published policy documents. For each one we name the batch it applies to, because several IIMs have not yet released their 2027-29 policies.
Why IIM Calls Differ for the Same CAT Percentile
The CAT 2026 Information Bulletin says plainly that each IIM sets its own eligibility criteria, “including academic cut-offs and relative weights”, and its own selection process. It adds that IIMs may use past academic performance and relevant work experience when shortlisting. You can read the bulletin on iimcat.ac.in. So one CAT score turns into a different composite score at each IIM. That explains why two candidates at the same percentile can end up with very different lists of calls.
Many aspirants ask why a 99.6 percentile scorer misses a call from a particular IIM while a 97 percentile scorer gets one. The usual reason is the non-CAT part of the composite. Class 10 and 12 marks, graduation marks, months of work experience, and gender or academic-diversity points can together be worth 35–50 points out of 100 at the shortlisting stage. A general-category male engineer fresher earns no diversity points at most of these institutes and no work-experience points. If his school marks are average, he also collects only part of the academic points. That gap has to be made up with CAT.
Look at the GEM CAT cutoff guide together with the policy details below. The minimum percentile thresholds IIMs publish are only entry filters. The actual shortlist is drawn from the composite score.
How Top IIMs Shortlist: Official Weights
The table below covers the shortlisting stage, meaning the score that decides who gets a WAT/PI call. It uses each institute’s latest published admission policy. IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta have released their 2027-29 policies for CAT 2026 applicants. For IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode and IIM Indore, the latest policies we could find on their websites are for the 2026-28 batch (CAT 2025). Treat those as a guide to how they work, not a guarantee for this cycle.
| IIM (policy batch) | CAT weight at shortlisting | Class 10 | Class 12 | Graduation | Work experience | Diversity points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Institute-by-Institute: What a GEM Profile Faces
IIM Ahmedabad: Academics Rated in Bands, Normalised Within Your Discipline
Under the 2027-29 policy, IIMA gives points for Class 10, Class 12 and graduation percentages using bands: 1 point for 55% or below, 2 for above 55 up to 60, 3 for above 60 up to 70, 5 for above 70 up to 80, 8 for above 80 up to 90, and 10 above 90. Work experience earns 0 below 12 months, 0.2 points per month beyond 11 months for 12–36 months, and a flat 5 above 36 months. Non-male candidates get 3 points.
To see what that means, take a fresher with 75% in Class 10, 75% in Class 12 and 70% in B.Tech. He gets 5 + 5 + 3 = 13 rating points. A fresher with 92%, 92% and 85% gets 10 + 10 + 8 = 28. The application rating is normalised against the top 50 scores and carries 35% of the composite, so the 15-point gap costs real ground that only CAT can recover.
IIMA then normalises the composite score within your undergraduate discipline, so engineers are compared with other engineers. The 2027-29 minimum CAT cut-offs for General and EWS candidates are 95 overall and 85 in each section. Final selection weights the PI at 50%, AWT at 10% and the shortlisting composite at 40%.
IIM Bangalore: Graduation Counts, and So Does Every Section
IIMB’s 2027-29 procedure first keeps only candidates with a positive raw score in all three sections and above its minimum percentiles. It then builds a pre-PI score: CAT 55 (VARC 19, DILR 21, QA 15), Class 10 10, Class 12 10, bachelor’s 10, work experience or professional course 10, and gender diversity 5. Work experience scores 10 × months/36 up to 36 months. Internships, articleship and unpaid work do not count. Academic components are standardised against the applicant pool and capped between 0 and the component weight.
Two details matter for an engineer. DILR carries the most CAT points (21 of 55), so a strong DILR score helps more here than at institutes that weight sections equally. And the automatic PI qualification for the top ten in “adjusted bachelor’s degree score” applies only to commerce, arts and science disciplines, not engineering.
IIM Calcutta: School Marks and CAT Only at Shortlisting
IIM Calcutta’s 2027-29 policy is the most CAT-heavy at the shortlisting stage. Its Stage I minimum for the open category is VARC 80, DILR 80, QA 75 and overall 85 percentile, with non-negative raw scores in all sections. The Stage II composite (out of 85) is CAT 56 (based on scaled score), Class 10 up to 10 and Class 12 up to 15, plus 4 points for female and transgender candidates.
Class 10 earns full points at 80% or above and drops in steps to 0 below 60%. Class 12 works the same way, from 15 points down to 0. Graduation marks and work experience are not used to shortlist. At final selection, an engineering degree earns 0 of the 6 academic-diversity points, and work experience counts for up to 8 points out of 100.
IIM Lucknow: No Class 10, but High Bars on Sections
IIM Lucknow’s 2026-28 policy, the latest available, set MBA minimums of 85 percentile in each section and 90 overall for general candidates. Its composite uses CAT 60, Class 12 10, graduation 10, work experience 10, and 5 points each for a non-engineering degree and for female candidates.
The Class 12 component gives points only when you are above the 80th percentile of past CAT applicants from your board and stream. So average Class 12 marks score close to zero rather than a small negative. Graduation marks are normalised within five discipline groups, Engineering among them. Work experience earns 0.5 points per month beyond 6 months, capped at 10.
IIM Kozhikode: Highest School-Marks Weight, Peak Work Experience Around 3 Years
IIM Kozhikode’s 2026-28 policy required at least 60% in graduation and, for general candidates, at least 60% in Class 10 and Class 12, along with 85 overall and 75 sectional CAT percentile. Its Aggregate Index Score gives CAT 50%, Class 10 15% and Class 12 20%. That is 35% on school marks, the highest share among these six. Diversity carries 10% for gender or 5% for a non-engineering degree, and work experience 5%.
The work-experience table peaks at 35–36 months and then declines. Final selection is CAT 35%, PI 35%, WAT 20% and resume 10%.
IIM Indore: Class 12 Carries 25 Points
IIM Indore’s 2026-28 composite gives 10 to Class 10 and 25 to Class 12, both normalised, and 55 to CAT sectional scores (VARC 16, DILR 16, QA 23). It adds a diversity factor of 7 and 0–3 for work experience. Graduation marks are not part of the shortlisting composite. Weak Class 12 marks hurt more here than anywhere else in this group, while QA, at 23 points, is the section that rewards an engineer’s strength most.
What These Policies Mean for a GEM Fresher with Average Academics
- Your CAT score has to cover missing points. A fresher with average school marks may be 15–25 points behind a high-academic, work-experienced or diversity-scoring applicant before CAT is even counted. Because CAT carries 50–65% of the composite, a few percentile points can close that gap, but only if you also clear every sectional cut-off.
- Sectional minimums are hard filters. IIMA (85 sectional), IIM Lucknow (85 sectional in 2026-28) and IIM Calcutta (80/80/75) drop anyone below their sectional floors, whatever the overall percentile. A 99 overall with a 78 in VARC can miss these lists entirely.
- Class 12 is the expensive one. It carries 25 points at IIM Indore, 20% at IIM Kozhikode and 15 at IIM Calcutta. If your Class 12 marks are your weakest number, those three are your hardest calls.
- Graduation matters at IIMA, IIMB and IIM Lucknow. A good B.Tech CGPA can partly offset average school marks at these three.
- Work experience between about 2 and 3 years scores fully or nearly fully at several IIMs. IIMB caps at 36 months, IIMA at above 36 months, and IIM Kozhikode peaks at 35–36 months.
Many aspirants also ask about non-engineers who are told they need 99.5+ for some IIMs. Non-engineers actually gain diversity points at IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode and IIM Calcutta (final stage). Profile-specific benchmarks are covered in the non-engineer female CAT cutoff guide.
What You Can Still Control Before and After CAT 2026
Before 29 November: Protect Every Section
Your past marks are fixed, so sectional balance matters most now. In the last mocks, check whether you clear roughly the same percentile in all three sections rather than chasing one very high section. IIMB and IIM Indore score sections separately, and IIMA, IIM Calcutta and IIM Lucknow apply sectional floors. A balanced 95/95/95 profile keeps more doors open than 99/99/80. For a day-by-day revision structure, see our CAT 2026 last 25 days plan. For targeted quant work, see the CAT 2026 quant strategy.
Apply Where Your Profile Is Weighted Lightly
- Among the six policies above, IIM Calcutta leaves out graduation marks and work experience at shortlisting and gives CAT 56 of 85 points. That suits a candidate whose graduation score is the weak point, provided Class 10 and 12 are not very low.
- IIMA’s discipline-wise normalisation means you are ranked against other engineers in the composite, not against the whole pool.
- The newer and smaller IIMs publish their own policies, and their weights vary widely. Read each one before you decide where to apply. Our IIM Bodh Gaya 2027-29 admission criteria report is one example.
- Outside the IIMs, several schools use XAT, SNAP, NMAT or their own processes. Our guide to MBA entrance exams after CAT 2026 covers dates and deadlines.
Consider Work Experience Seriously
If CAT 2026 gives you calls only from institutes you would not join, one or two years of full-time paid work changes your profile at most IIMs in the table. A CAT score is valid only for the admission cycle it is meant for. The bulletin says CAT 2026 scores are valid until 31 December 2027 (see CAT score validity), so a later attempt means taking CAT again.
Use Past Benchmarks Carefully
Do not treat any single “cutoff” number as a promise. Official minimums are published by each IIM, while final shortlist scores are rarely disclosed. Our CAT cutoff for general category page and the news report on the expected CAT 2026 cutoff trend give context. Treat them as estimates, not official numbers.
Is the Shortlisting Process Transparent?
Many aspirants call the process opaque after missing a call at a high percentile. The shortlisting formulas themselves are public: every institute above publishes its components and weights. What usually is not public is the final composite cut-off for each category, because it depends on that year’s applicant pool. IIMA’s policy says it shortlists independently of other IIMs, so lists will differ. It also says it does not disclose individual performance details or the weights given to attributes assessed in the interview. If you think there is an error in your own data, such as wrong marks or work-ex months, write to the admissions office of that IIM through its official channel.
Also confirm what you entered in the CAT form. IIMA and IIM Lucknow both use the work-experience months and academic marks from the CAT application. You will need marksheets and employer letters that match those entries at the interview stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a general male engineer fresher with 70–75% in Class 10 and 12 get an IIM call?
Yes, but the CAT percentile needed is usually higher than for a candidate with strong academics, work experience or diversity points. Under the IIMA 2027-29 bands, 70% earns 3 points and 75% earns 5, against 10 for marks above 90%. The rest of the composite has to come from CAT. Calls are more realistic at IIMs that weight graduation or CAT more heavily than school marks.
Which top IIM gives the most weight to CAT at shortlisting?
Among the policies reviewed, IIMA gives 65% of the composite to the CAT total percentile (2027-29), IIM Lucknow gives 60 out of 100 (2026-28), and IIM Calcutta gives 56 out of 85 (2027-29). IIM Kozhikode gives the least, at 50% (2026-28).
Does work experience help more than a higher CAT score?
It depends on the institute. Work experience is worth up to 10 points at IIMB and IIM Lucknow, but only 0–3 at IIM Indore and 5% at IIM Kozhikode. IIM Calcutta does not count it at shortlisting at all. At most IIMs, a few extra CAT percentile points move the composite more than a few months of experience.
Do IIMs give extra points to non-engineers?
Some do. IIM Lucknow (2026-28) gave 5 points for a non-engineering bachelor’s degree. IIM Kozhikode (2026-28) gave 5% for academic diversity, as an alternative to the gender points. IIM Calcutta (2027-29) awards up to 6 academic-diversity points at final selection, with 0 for an engineering degree.
Is a 99 percentile enough for IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore or Calcutta?
A 99 overall percentile clears every published overall minimum, though sectional floors still apply separately, and the institutes do not publish the final composite score needed for a call. For a GEM fresher with average academics, 99 may or may not be enough depending on sectional scores and the pool. Apply widely and check each IIM’s shortlist when results come out in January.
Are the 2027-29 admission policies out for all IIMs?
Not all of them. IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta have published 2027-29 policies for CAT 2026 applicants. For other IIMs, the latest policy we could locate was for 2026-28. Check each IIM’s admissions page before you apply, because weights can change between cycles.
