About Kannur University School of Distance Education
The School of Distance Education (SDE) was established by Kannur University vide Order No. Acad/A1/CDE/6034/2001 dated 22.05.2002 with the objective of providing opportunities to learners from Kasaragod, Kannur districts and Mananthavady Taluk of Wayanad district for pursuing higher studies who are otherwise deprived of it. The SDE continues to fulfill the prime responsibility of providing education at the doorstep for those who are unable to access formal education.
The School of Distance Education started functioning with B.Com Degree Course in the year 2002-03. The total number of students enrolled in SDE during its establishment year was only 32, which has significantly increased over the years. Presently, the SDE offers 17 different courses/programs of which 10 are undergraduate courses, 5 are postgraduate courses, and 2 are certificate courses.
The method of instruction includes printed study material in Self Learning Mode, Personal Contact Programme, Orientation Programme, and Dissertations/Projects in selected courses. The SDE also provides various student support services such as counseling of students and guidance from qualified and experienced teachers.
In 2023-24, the School of Distance Education was reorganized and renamed as “School of Lifelong Learning” to better reflect its mission of providing continuous education opportunities. The staff of SDE are committed to transforming the centre into one of the leading distance education centres in the country.
Kannur University was established by the Act 22 of 1996 of Kerala Legislative Assembly. The University by the name “Malabar University” had come into existence earlier by the promulgation of an Ordinance by the Governor of Kerala on 9th November 1995. The University was inaugurated on 2nd March 1996 by the then Chief Minister of Kerala, Sri. A.K. Antony.
