The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) celebrated its 63rd Convocation at the Students Activity Centre on campus. The milestone event marked the graduation of thousands of students and highlighted the institute’s expanding global academic footprint.

His Excellency Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Zanzibar President Urges Ethical Innovation

Addressing the graduating class, President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi stressed that while artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, and quantum computing are transforming the world, technology alone cannot ensure progress.

“Every great innovation presents humanity with a choice. It can deepen inequality or expand opportunity. It can divide communities or unite them. That choice belongs not to technology itself, but to those who create it,” Dr. Mwinyi noted.

He lauded IIT Madras for its culture of innovation, praising its ability to translate classroom ideas into real-world enterprises that solve societal challenges.

During the event, the layout of the IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus was officially unveiled. Director Prof. V. Kamakoti reported that the Zanzibar campus currently hosts students from Tanzania, India, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Zambia. Notably, the inaugural M.Tech batch at the Zanzibar campus achieved 100% industrial placements, securing roles at major companies including Airtel, Zantel, and SuperDoll. The institute plans to scale the Zanzibar campus enrollment to between 350 and 500 students by 2027.

Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman of the Board of Governors at IIT Madras, highlighted the institute’s vibrant deep-tech ecosystem, which has nurtured over 560 startups with a cumulative valuation exceeding ₹74,000 crore.
