Maharashtra Govt Scraps 30-Year Age Limit for Tribal Hostel Admissions After Student Agitation

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, officially removed the 30-year age limit for admission to tribal hostels across the state. Maharashtra Tribal Hostel Admissions: Age Limit Removed

Tribal Development Minister Ashok Uike confirmed that the 30-year age limit, which was a key point of contention in the August 14, 2026, government resolution, has been entirely withdrawn. This means there will now be no age bar for admission to tribal hostels in Maharashtra. The decision was made after extensive consultations, including a meeting at Minister Uike’s residence, ‘Lohgad’, to review facilities and management.

The meeting saw the participation of key officials and elected representatives, including minister Narhari Zirwal, tribal MPs and MLAs, Tribal Development Department secretary Vijay Waghmare, Tribal Development Commissioner Leena Bansod, and Tribal Research and Training Institute (TRTI) Commissioner Nilesh Sagar. Minister Uike stated, “with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ approval, the government has decided to completely cancel the August 14, 2026 government resolution and the consolidated revised rules issued in connection with it.” He further added, “We are removing the condition of age limit of 30 years for admission to tribal hostels. This condition was mentioned in the GR (government resolution) issued on August 14 this year. Now, as per the instructions of the tribal MLAs and MPs, we have decided to cancel this condition. There will be no age bar now for admission in tribal hostels.”

Background to the Student Agitation

The decision follows a sustained 13-day agitation by tribal students at Manjari in Pune, which escalated on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. The protest encompassed a range of grievances, including hostel facilities, admission rules, and other critical issues affecting tribal students. Initially, the government had revised an August 5 resolution, raising the age ceiling from 26 to 30 and removing protest restrictions, but this was deemed insufficient by the protesting students.

The Maharashtra Congress also weighed in, with leaders Vijay Wadettiwar, Sanjay Meshram, and Ramdas Masram meeting protesting students from August 17 onwards, questioning Minister Uike’s handling of the situation.

Beyond the age limit, protesters raised several other critical demands. These include the urgent filling of 12,500 vacancies within the Tribal Development Department and providing ₹1 crore in compensation to the families of tribal girls who tragically died from snake bites in a Gadchiroli Ashram School. Nisha Sable, a tribal protester, emphasized, “We want the government to address our other concerns. May it be filling the 12,500 vacancies or giving ₹1 crore to the families of tribal girls who lost their lives in the snake bite incident in Gadchiroli Ashram School. We will continue our protest till all our main demands are met.”

Allegations of Pregnancy Tests Refuted

Amidst the protests, Nisha Sable also alleged that tribal girls were subjected to pregnancy tests. However, the State government vehemently refuted these claims on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Minister Uike categorically stated, “Nothing like this has happened, or will happen,” dismissing the allegations as unfounded. Despite the government’s announcement regarding the age limit, a delegation of Pune protesters, who met Minister Uike in Mumbai for about five hours on Tuesday, insisted they would not call off their fast without written assurances or concrete changes addressing all their demands.
