Mohd Mustafa Kamal Wins National Teachers Award 2026 for Transforming Kargil Bunkers into History Labs

Mohd Mustafa Kamal, a 41-year-old school teacher from Wakha village near Kargil, Ladakh, was conferred the prestigious National Teachers Award 2026 by President Droupadi Murmu on September 5, 2026, in New Delhi. Kamal was recognised for his huge work in transforming derelict Kargil war bunkers into history labs and implementing new, experiential teaching methods for Social Science education.

His contributions to education are significant, focusing on contextual and technology-enabled learning that uses local heritage and community life as primary resources. This bottom-up approach to education, as noted by innovator Sonam Wangchuk, has redefined how students perceive subjects like history and civics, making them practical and engaging.

Mohd Mustafa Kamal’s creative teaching journey, which began in 2011, has seen him introduce several unique concepts to make learning more interactive and relevant for students. From 2021 to 2026, while teaching classes 6 to 8 at Government Model Middle School Grong Pashkum, he converted one of the school’s derelict military bunkers into a prehistoric lab, offering students a tangible link to history. This ‘Cave Classroom’ initiative is part of his broader effort to use the local environment as a teaching resource.

Beyond the bunkers, Kamal also introduced the ‘Museum Classroom’ concept, utilising local artefacts to bring lessons to life. For civics lessons, he ingeniously rearranged classroom seating to resemble a parliament, fostering a deeper understanding of democratic processes. Another notable innovation is ‘Great Bath Ludo’, a game based on the ancient city of Mohenjo-Daro, designed to make historical learning fun and engaging. He has also incorporated digital tools such as School Bhuvan, Google Earth, Stellarium, Kahoot, and Quizizz, and contributed digital lessons through the government’s PM eVIDYA initiative.

Kamal’s dedication to education extends beyond the classroom. He served for 10 years as the president of a Ladakh teachers’ association, advocating for educators and educational reforms in the region. His commitment to enhancing the learning experience was previously recognised with the Ladakh State Award 2021 for his work at Government Middle School Langkarche Thang.

Reflecting on his methods, Kamal shared a memorable quote from a middle-school student, who for the first time called his subject ‘practical’. He stated, “This was the first time my subject was called practical, and that too by a middle-school student. It showed how students were beginning to perceive the subject.” He also cherishes a stone given by a curious student, remarking, “I still have that stone in my house. It is a cherishable memory of how curious a student as young as him can be.”

The National Teachers’ Awards 2026 ceremony, held on September 5, saw a total of 48 teachers from across India being honoured for their outstanding contributions to education. Among the recipients, 26 were men and 22 were women, reflecting a diverse representation of educators dedicated to shaping the future of the nation.

Mohd Mustafa Kamal, currently associated with Government Middle School Zgangjing, Sankoo, Kargil, represents the spirit of innovation and dedication that these awards aim to celebrate. Sonam Wangchuk Praises Bottom-UP Approach

Innovator and education reformist Sonam Wangchuk, whom Mustafa met in 2016 during an oath ceremony where Wangchuk launched a ‘pilot project’, lauded Kamal’s methodology. Wangchuk commented on the unique nature of Kamal’s initiatives, stating, “This is something that every government document has; it is not new to me. But this is the first time that I see a bottom-up approach.” This observation highlights the effectiveness of Kamal’s strategies in bringing educational reforms directly to the grassroots level, making learning more accessible and relatable for students in remote areas like Kargil.
