Private medical colleges and deemed universities participating in the Medical Counselling Commission (MCC) NEET PG 2026 counselling have implemented significant fee increases for MD/MS programs. Some postgraduate courses now exceed Rs 2 crore in overall cost, with the first seat allotment for MCC NEET PG counselling 2026 scheduled for October 24, 2026.
Out of 54 medical schools operating under deemed university status, 12 will charge over Rs 2 crore in cumulative tuition and major one-time admission charges for their three-year MD/MS programs. Approximately 40% of all courses at these institutions will cost over Rs 1 crore, excluding hostel and mess fees. These fee hikes have reignited discussions regarding government oversight of deemed medical college fees.
Fee Hikes in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra
Four medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, which received deemed-to-be university tags this year from the education ministry despite opposition from the state government, have increased their postgraduate medical course fees by up to 1,471% in some instances. These colleges will charge between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 55 lakh per annum for clinical branches and Rs 0 to Rs 15 lakh for pre- and para-clinical streams. This marks a substantial increase compared to the Rs 3.5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh annual fees determined by the Tamil Nadu fee fixation committee for clinical and non-clinical government-quota seats in private self-financed medical colleges. Management quota seats at these Tamil Nadu institutes are set at Rs 16 lakh for clinical and Rs 5 lakh for non-clinical specializations.
In Maharashtra, Dr DY Patil University’s medical college in Navi Mumbai recorded a 24% single-year hike in its MD Radiodiagnosis fee, making it the costliest PG course ever at Rs 2.61 crore in overall program cost, including a 2.5% yearly increment. Dr DY Patil Medical College, Kolhapur, increased its MS OB-GYN program cost by Rs 27 lakh, a 29% increase over the Rs 93.3 lakh charged in the 2025-26 academic year. Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College, Pune, implemented a 20% fee hike across most clinical courses, with dermatology and radiodiagnosis now costing Rs 1.69 crore. Santosh Medical College, Ghaziabad, has set its radiodiagnosis program at Rs 2.28 crore.

Deemed University Status and Fee Control
The centre’s granting of deemed-university tags, even in the face of state government opposition, has been cited as a reason for the soaring fees. Private deemed universities operate with broad academic and administrative autonomy, enabling them to charge significantly higher fees compared to state-affiliated medical colleges. The National Medical Commission’s (NMC) efforts to control fees have been hindered by lawsuits.
Of over 1,000 postgraduate programs reviewed across 54 deemed universities, approximately one-third reported fee hikes this year. Most other programs maintained last year’s fees, while a few non-clinical courses saw a reduction. Fees for the 15% non-resident Indian (NRI)-quota seats are substantially higher than other categories. Admission to postgraduate medical programs is conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for PG (NEET PG exam), with counselling for 100% of deemed-university seats managed centrally by the MCC.

Context of Deemed University Conversions
The state of Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry, has a high concentration of medical colleges affiliated with deemed universities, which are also among the most expensive. Two Tamil Nadu medical colleges, Karpaga Vinayaga Institute of Medical Sciences, Kancheepuram, and St. Peter’s Medical College, Hosur, disaffiliated from The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University (TNMGRMU). Additionally, Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Institute of Medical Sciences, Tiruchirappalli, and Srinivasan Medical College changed their status from a state private university to a deemed university. The Tamil Nadu government has challenged these conversions in Madras High Court, alleging that these colleges used “legal loopholes.”
Government postgraduate seats generally have substantially lower tuition costs than many private and deemed options. There is no single NEET PG private college fee; fees vary widely between institutions, specialties, categories, and counselling systems.
