The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Graduate School (TIFR GS) has released the examination pattern for its 2026 Chemistry entrance exam. The exam is scheduled to take place on December 14, 2025, and will be conducted in two sessions: morning and afternoon.

The TIFR GS exam, which lasts for three hours regardless of the chosen subject, is designed to assess conceptual clarity, analytical reasoning, and the application of chemistry fundamentals across various areas. The recently released pattern provides clarity for prospective candidates on the structure and scoring of the chemistry paper.

TIFR Gs 2026 Chemistry Exam Structure and Marking

The TIFR GS 2026 Chemistry exam will consist of a single section comprising 40 multiple-choice questions. For each correct answer, candidates will be awarded 3 marks. However, a negative marking scheme is in place, with 1 mark deducted for every incorrect answer.

This structure is distinct from other subjects, such as the TIFR GS Biology Exam 2025, also known as the Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences. The biology exam has two parts: Section A with 10 multiple-choice questions, each earning 1 mark for a correct answer, and Section B with 5 multiple-choice questions, each earning 2 marks for a correct answer. Incorrect answers in the biology exam result in a deduction of 1 mark each.

Application Process Guidelines for TIFR Gs 2026

Applicants for the TIFR GS 2026 exams are advised to use a desktop or laptop for registration, as certain links on the official portal (tifr.res.in) may not function correctly on mobile browsers. This matters a lot for candidates to accurately enter their details during the basic registration phase, as information such as name, date of birth, mobile number, email ID, SSC details, subject, and program cannot be modified once submitted.

The system will not permit duplicate registrations. After logging in, applicants must click the ‘Go to Application’ link located in the top-right corner of the page to complete their full application. Required documents include a scanned passport-size photograph and a scanned copy of the signature, both preferably in JPG format and below 80 KB. Applications featuring personal photos (selfies) or edited photographs will be rejected. Candidates applying under the Fee Waiver category must also upload a scanned copy of a recommendation letter from the Principal or Head of Department of their college. Upon successful registration, applicants have the option to print their application or save it as a PDF file.
