The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) has been directed by the Allahabad High Court to revise the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET) 2026 results. The court, in an order passed on October 28, mandated the exclusion of two disputed questions, Questions 36 and 37, from the evaluation process and the recalculation of all candidates’ scores.

This decision, issued by Justice Vinod Diwakar, extends the benefit of the revised evaluation to all candidates who are similarly affected by the disputed questions. The UPTET 2026 examination will now be treated as comprising 148 questions instead of the original 150, with qualifying marks to be recalculated accordingly.

Background to the Court’s Decision

The court’s directive followed a writ petition filed by Vijay Sonkar and three other candidates who challenged the evaluation of Questions 36 and 37 in the final answer key. The petitioners contended that both questions had more than one correct answer, rendering the commission’s evaluation method unsustainable. The UPTET 2026 results, initially announced on August 26, had declared the petitioners unsuccessful, with normalised scores ranging from 80.40104 to 81.39740, against a qualifying mark of 82.

For Question 36, the commission had treated options B and D as correct, while for Question 37, options A and D were accepted. The court found that the options for these questions in the master set were ambiguous and erroneous. The commission had awarded marks only to candidates who selected either of the two accepted options for the disputed questions, a method the court deemed unsustainable.

Impact on UPTET 2026 Results and Eligibility

The revised evaluation will lead to a new cut-off determination for UPTET 2026. The court’s decision is expected to benefit candidates who missed qualifying by one or two marks. The revised UPTET results will be issued based on 148 questions, and corrected results and scorecards will be provided by the commission wherever required.

The court clarified that this revised evaluation is confined to correcting UPTET 2026 results and determining eligibility status. It will not automatically entitle candidates to appointment or selection in subsequent recruitment exercises. Candidates must even so fulfill all prescribed conditions for any subsequent recruitment process.

Judicial Precedents and Next Steps

In reaching its decision, the Allahabad High Court relied on its earlier ruling in the UPTET 2018 case, Smt Shimla Singh vs State of Uttar Pradesh. The court also considered other judicial precedents, including decisions in Ashok Yadav, Ran Vijay Singh, and Rishal, which addressed similar issues concerning questions with multiple accepted answers.

Candidates can check the revised UPTET result on the official website, upessc.up.gov.in. The process involves clicking on the result link, entering login details, and submitting the information to access the revised scorecard.
