Pralhad Joshi Appointed as New Union Education Minister Following Dharmendra Pradhan’s Resignation
In a major political development at the Centre, Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Cabinet Minister Pralhad Joshi has officially taken charge as India’s new Union Minister of Education. The appointment comes following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, who stepped down from the role taking moral responsibility amid widespread nationwide student protests over recent examination paper leak controversies and competitive testing irregularities.
According to an official communique issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution of India. Simultaneously, the President directed that Pralhad Joshi be assigned additional charge of the Ministry of Education alongside his current cabinet portfolios.
Departure Following Student Protests
Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation follows weeks of intense student demonstrations across the country. Protests flared up significantly in the capital and at Jantar Mantar, led by student unions demanding accountability for national entrance examination irregularities, including leaks associated with the NEET-UG exams.
In a public resignation letter addressed to “young friends” shared on social media, Pradhan explained that he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in light of recent events. Stating that the trust of young students remained paramount, Pradhan chose to take moral responsibility for the administrative lapses within the national testing ecosystem. His exit paved the way for top-level dialogue between government representatives and student bodies to address key grievances.
Pralhad Joshi Takes Additional Charge
Pralhad Joshi officially assumed office at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi, pledging to restore faith in the country’s public examination system and further strengthen India’s learning infrastructure.
Addressing the media after taking over the position, Joshi expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for entrusting him with the crucial portfolio. He stated:
“I accept this responsibility with a deep sense of duty, humility, and honesty. Over the last decade, our government under PM Narendra Modi has achieved historic milestones in reform. My predecessor Dharmendra Pradhan worked tirelessly to roll out the National Education Policy (NEP) and introduce vital reforms. Under the guidance of the Prime Minister, I will work to the best of my ability to serve our students and build a resilient educational framework.”
Joshi will handle the Education Ministry in addition to his existing responsibilities as Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, as well as New and Renewable Energy.

Key Priorities and Challenges Ahead
The transition in leadership comes at a sensitive time for the Ministry of Education. Among the top priorities facing Pralhad Joshi is the immediate task of overhauling national examination protocols. The government has already begun restructuring the National Testing Agency (NTA), introducing stricter anti-paper leak measures, and evaluating transitioning major competitive entrance tests to secure computer-based formats.
Additionally, Joshi will be tasked with accelerating the rollout of the National Education Policy across schools and higher education institutes nationwide. Restoring public confidence among millions of students and parents remains the single most important agenda for the newly appointed minister.
