UP Schools and Colleges Closed in Several Districts Amid Kanwar Yatra Influx: Check Affected Areas, Dates, and Exam Updates
Educational institutions across several key districts in Western Uttar Pradesh have been ordered to remain temporarily closed in response to the massive influx of pilgrims during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra. Authorities in districts including Ghaziabad, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and Baghpat issued directives shutting all government and private schools, colleges, universities, and technical institutes to guarantee public safety and prevent severe traffic congestion.
The temporary shutdown comes as lakhs of Kanwariyas (devotees of Lord Shiva) travel from Haridwar and other sacred sites along major transit corridors toward their destination temples ahead of Shravan Shivratri.
District-Wise School Closure Schedule
District administrations across Western UP have implemented varying holiday schedules tailored to local traffic movement and pilgrim density:
-
Ghaziabad: District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mander and District Inspector of Schools (DIOS) B.P. Singh announced that all schools from Nursery to Class 12—covering CBSE, ICSE, UP Board, Basic Education Board, and Madrassa boards—will remain closed from August 4 to August 12. Degree colleges, technical institutions, and universities in the district are also included under the directive.
-
Meerut: District Magistrate V.K. Singh ordered the closure of all educational institutions from August 3 to August 12. All primary, secondary, and higher education facilities remain suspended during this nine-day stretch.
-
Muzaffarnagar: District Magistrate Umesh Mishra instructed all schools and colleges to suspend offline classes from August 3 to August 10.
-
Baghpat and Neighboring Areas: Similar closure notifications have been extended in Baghpat, with neighboring districts like Bareilly and Kasganj enforcing temporary traffic-based restrictions and institutional breaks based on local pilgrimage route congestion.
Traffic Diversions and Safety Rationale
The administrative decisions were triggered by unprecedented crowds on critical national highways and expressways. Heavy pilgrim footfall along the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, the Delhi-Dehradun Highway, and the Ghaziabad-Meerut Road necessitated extensive route closures and one-way diversions.
In Ghaziabad, officials closed the designated stretch of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway two days ahead of schedule after a sudden surge in pilgrims created heavy bottlenecking. Key thoroughfares have been dedicated exclusively to foot traffic for Kanwariyas, leaving limited road capacity for commuters and school transport.
District officials emphasized that student safety remains the primary factor behind the closure. “The movement of devotees along main transit routes intensifies daily leading up to Shivratri,” noted a senior administration official. “Shutting physical campuses reduces road risk for young students and avoids severe transit delays caused by emergency route diversions.”
Key Directives: Examinations, Online Classes, and Reopening Guidelines
While physical attendance remains suspended, district orders include specific exemptions and mandates for educational continuity:
-
Pre-Scheduled Examinations Exempted: University semester tests, board internal assessments, and technical board examinations already scheduled prior to the notification will proceed without interruption. Students sitting for these examinations are permitted to travel with valid admit cards.
-
Shift to Virtual Learning: Private schools and select higher education centers have been advised to switch to online classes to ensure curriculum completion is not delayed during the closure period.
-
Reopening Dates: Regular offline operations across most affected districts, including Ghaziabad and Meerut, are scheduled to resume on August 13, immediately following the conclusion of the Kanwar Yatra and Shravan Shivratri celebrations on August 11 and 12.
Commuter Advisory and Local Measures
In addition to academic closures, local administrations have deployed heightened security measures along major pilgrim routes. Phased traffic diversions, surveillance, and temporary restrictions on specific commercial operations along Kanwar corridors have been enforced to maintain law and order. Parents and students are strongly advised to monitor official communications from their respective District Magistrate offices and school authorities for further route updates and reopening confirmations.
