The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati has officially launched its inaugural Master of Business Administration (MBA) batch for the 2026–2028 academic session. This historic milestone marks the establishment of India’s 22nd IIM and the second premier management institute in the North-Eastern region alongside IIM Shillong.

The inaugural cohort brings together 52 high-achieving students hailing from 18 different states, reflecting a vibrant pan-India culture from day one. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially inaugurated the flagship program at the institute’s state-of-the-art transit campus, located at Tech City in Bongora, Kamrup district.

  • May 2022: The Assam state government formally submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Education advocating for an IIM in the state.

  • April 2024 & August 2025: Received principal approval, followed by final Union Cabinet clearance.

  • February 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the academic session of IIM Guwahati, kicking off executive education programs.

  • Mid-2026: Just five months after the initial academic launch, the flagship two-year full-time MBA program commenced classes.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that establishing IIM Guwahati fulfills a long-cherished dream for the region. Bringing world-class management training to Assam helps retain local talent while drawing bright minds from across the nation.

IIM Ahmedabad Mentorship and Transit Campus Facilities

To ensure top-tier academic rigor, IIM Ahmedabad—India’s leading business school—is serving as the primary mentoring institute for IIM Guwahati. Prof. Bharat Bhasker, Director of IIM Ahmedabad, joined state education leaders at the inauguration ceremony to welcome the pioneer batch.

While construction on the permanent 574-bigha (189-acre) campus at Palashbari progresses over the next three years, the Assam state government invested nearly ₹39 crore to build a fully equipped transit campus. Facilities include:

  • Digitally equipped smart classrooms and lecture halls

  • A comprehensive management library and modern administrative blocks

  • Dedicated faculty residences and staff accommodations

  • Three modern student hostel complexes

Additionally, the state inaugurated a ₹53.84-crore Digital Design and 3D Printing Centre of Excellence at Tech City under the PM-DeVINE scheme, fostering cutting-edge technology adoption across the region.
