IIT Gandhinagar opens applications for visiting student research programmes; apply by October 26

The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT Gandhinagar) today, October 8, 2026, announced the opening of applications for its Visiting Students Research Engagement Programme and the Visiting Student Programme for Semester II of Academic Year 2026-27. These programmes are designed to allow students from recognised institutions to spend a semester at IIT Gandhinagar, engaging in research, taking courses, or utilising academic facilities.

The application window for both programmes will close on October 26, 2026, at 5 PM IST, with the programme period scheduled from January to April 2027. Interested students are advised to review the eligibility criteria and application procedures on the official IIT Gandhinagar admissions portal.

Visiting Students Research Engagement Programme Details

The Visiting Students Research Engagement Programme is specifically targeted at select final year students from other IITs, IISERs, IISc, and NITs. Participants in this programme will undertake a semester-long internship, working on a research project under the guidance of IIT Gandhinagar faculty members.

Students enrolled in this programme will be registered as visiting students and are required to register for Research Engagement credits. These credits can be earned in 4-credit modules, designated as IN 497 – Research Engagement. A student is permitted to earn a maximum of 4 credits in one quad, with a semester divided into four quads. The total maximum credits for IN 497 that can be earned during a student’s stay is 16. Grades for IN 497 will be assigned by the host department at the end of each quad using standard letter grades.

Visiting Student Programme and Part-Time Options

The broader Visiting Student Programme is open to students officially registered for a degree at any recognised institute or university, both within India and internationally. Applicants must secure official sponsorship from their parent institution to complete a portion of their academic requirements at IIT Gandhinagar. It is specified that credits earned as a visiting student cannot be applied towards any degree programme at IIT Gandhinagar at any point.

Undergraduate visiting students are mandated to register for a minimum of three to four courses per semester, with a maximum limit of six courses. Postgraduate visiting students are required to register for a minimum of three courses per semester, with a maximum of five courses. Also, IIT Gandhinagar also offers a Part-Time Visiting Students Programme, allowing students to register for one or two courses, or to conduct research and use other academic facilities. Eligibility for part-time visiting students includes a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, a Master’s degree in Sciences, or a Master’s degree in Humanities and Social Sciences. Accommodation is not provided for part-time students.

Fee Structure and Application Process

The fee structure for visiting students varies based on their academic level and programme type. Undergraduate visiting students incur a tuition fee of ₹1,00,000 per semester, while postgraduate visiting students are charged ₹50,000 per semester. Both undergraduate and postgraduate visiting students are subject to approximate other charges of ₹54,860 per semester and a refundable security deposit of ₹10,400. Accommodation is included for full-time visiting students.

Part-time visiting students are charged ₹5,000 per credit. Accommodation is not provided for part-time students. Queries related to the programme can be directed to admission@iitgn.ac.in.
