IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur have significantly bolstered their scholarship and fellowship offerings for top-performing students, with grants ranging from Rs 90,000 per month for Ph.D. scholars to an annual Rs 3 lakh for undergraduate rankers. These initiatives, announced by the respective institutions, aim to encourage and reward academic excellence, support meritorious students, and promote high-quality research across various disciplines.

The scholarships and fellowships are designed to alleviate financial burdens and provide detailed support, covering tuition, living expenses, and research grants, thereby enabling India’s brightest minds to pursue their higher education and research aspirations at these premier institutions without hindrance.

IIT Kanpur Scholarships: Bright Minds and Beyond

IIT Kanpur, established on 2nd November 1959 by an Act of Parliament, offers a thorough ‘Bright Minds Scholarships’ program, providing an annual scholarship of Rs 3 lakhs. This initiative is specifically designed for students admitted to the BTech/BS Program for the 2022-23 academic year who secured a top 100 All India Rank (AIR) in JEE 2022. The scholarship covers a complete waiver of courses, hostel, books, and miscellaneous expenses throughout the undergraduate program, as stated by the Information and Media Outreach Cell, IIT Kanpur.

Beyond the ‘Bright Minds Scholarships’, IIT Kanpur administers 129 donor-funded scholarships and offers several other merit and means-based aids. This includes a Merit-cum-Means Scholarship for non-SC/ST students with an annual parental income below Rs 4.5 lakh, providing a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000. Additionally, an INSPIRE Scholarship is available for B.S. programmes in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics for students with an AIR within 10,000 in CML, offering Rs 30,000 per semester (Rs 60,000 annually) and a research grant of Rs 20,000 per year. SC/ST students with an annual parental income below Rs 4.5 lakh can also avail a Free Basic Mess Scholarship. The institute further awards 20 sports scholarships worth Rs 1,000 per month for nine months annually, and students with a CPI of 8.5 or above are considered for Academic Excellence Awards.

IIT Kharagpur Scholarships: JEE Advanced and GATE Rankers

IIT Kharagpur has instituted the ‘Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Full Scholarship for Top 100 JEE (Advanced) Rankers’, implemented from the academic session 2021-22. This scholarship is described by IIT Kharagpur as India’s first-of-its-kind full-ride scholarship, aiming to attract and support the nation’s brightest engineering aspirants. This initiative underscores IIT Kharagpur’s commitment to fostering academic talent from the very entry point of higher education.

In a significant move to promote high-quality research, IIT Kharagpur also announced a Special Ph.D. Fellowship for Top GATE 2026 Rankers, named the Director’s Platinum Jubilee Excellence Ph.D. Fellowship (DPEF). This fellowship is specifically designed for the top 50 rank holders of GATE 2026. Selected DPEF candidates will receive a substantial monthly stipend of ₹80,000 during the first two years of their Ph.D. Program, which will then increase to ₹90,000 per month for the subsequent three years, providing tough financial support for their doctoral studies.

IIT Kharagpur Merit-Cum-Means and Other Aids

Beyond these top-tier scholarships, IIT Kharagpur offers Merit-Cum-Means (MCM) scholarships to not more than 25% of students admitted each year to Undergraduate and Dual Degree courses. These MCM scholarship holders are entitled to exemption from payment of the Institute tuition fee. For fresh entrants, the merit criterion for the IIT Kharagpur MCM scholarship requires at least 60% marks in aggregate in the qualifying examination for JEE Advanced. For subsequent renewals, the student’s GPA must not be lower than 7.00, ensuring continued academic performance.

Eligibility for IIT Kharagpur’S Merit-Cum-Means Scholarship

• For fresh entrants, candidates must have secured at least 60% marks in aggregate in the qualifying examination for JEE Advanced.
• For subsequent renewals, the student’s GPA must not be lower than 7.00 in the preceding academic session.
• Candidates must also meet the annual income limit specified by the Government of India for such scholarships.
