IIT Madras online BS: Apply by September 27, 2026

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has commenced admissions for its Online BS Degree Programs for the September 2026 term. Prospective candidates must submit their qualifier applications by September 27, 2026, to be considered for the upcoming academic cycle.

These programs aim to broaden access to IIT-quality education for a diverse learner base, removing age restrictions and the requirement of clearing the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Students gain admission through a structured qualifier process.

Program Offerings and Structure

IIT Madras is offering online BS degrees across four distinct domains: Data Science and Applications, Electronic Systems, Management and Data Science, and Aeronautics and Space Technology. These programs are delivered primarily online, with in-person examinations conducted at designated centres across India.

Learners have the flexibility to progress at their own pace and can opt for multiple exit points, including Certificate, Diploma, or Degree pathways. The degrees can be pursued as standalone qualifications or concurrently with a traditional college degree, with the curriculum developed in collaboration with industry experts.

The Qualifier Process and Eligibility

Admission to the online BS programs is supported through a qualifier process, which involves four weeks of coursework comprising lecture videos, assignments, and live sessions. To be eligible for the Qualifier Exam, candidates must achieve minimum required average assignment scores in all four foundational courses.

The Qualifier Exam is an in-person assessment of four hours duration, covering all four foundational courses. Passing the Qualifier Exam requires a minimum average qualifier exam score and a minimum score in each course individually. Fee support of up to 75% is available for eligible students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

For the BS in Data Science and Applications, foundational courses include English I, Mathematics for Data Science I, Statistics for Data Science I, and Computational Thinking. For the BS in Electronic Systems, the foundational courses are English I, Math for Electronics I, Electronic Systems Thinking and Circuits, and Introduction to C Programming. The BS in Management and Data Science requires Maths 1, Stats 1, CT, and English 1 as foundational courses.

Validity of Qualifier Results and Re-Attempts

The validity of Qualifier Exam results varies depending on the program and the candidate’s academic status. For the BS in Data Science and Applications, results are valid for three terms (one year) for candidates who have already cleared their Class 12 board exams, and for six terms (two years) for those yet to appear for Class 12 board exams.

For the BS in Electronic Systems, qualifier marks are valid for two semesters for candidates who have already cleared Class 12 board exams, and for four semesters for students attempting the qualifier exam while still in school (Standard XII). Learners who were eligible but did not clear or were absent for the qualifier exam can re-attempt in the same term without repeating assignments.

We are seeing a growing need for learners to build strong foundations in data, technology, and interdisciplinary thinking, regardless of their primary degree. This program allows students to access IIT Madras-level learning while pursuing other academic or professional paths, thereby significantly enhancing their career opportunities.”

Management and Data Science Program Structure

The BS Degree in Management and Data Science program is structured into three levels, requiring a total of 142 credits for the full BS Degree. This program also offers earlier exit options with a Foundation Level Certificate or a Diploma in Data Analytics for Business.

The Foundational Level comprises 32 credits, followed by the Diploma Level with 60 credits, and the final BS Degree Level with 50 credits. Candidates can register for up to four courses in their first term if they achieve an Average Qualifier Exam Score of 70% or more.
