  • The university has been experiencing protests for 18 days, with students demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union (JMISU) and an election schedule.
  • Online classes have been extended until November 24, 2026, and practical and viva exams for the odd semester will be conducted online due to ongoing campus protests.

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has announced a deadline of May 15, 2027, for the completion of its students’ union constitution, a move that comes amid 18 days of continuous protests on campus. Concurrently, the university administration has revoked all disciplinary actions, including show-cause notices, rustication, suspensions, and campus ban orders, that were issued during the protest period. The JMI order has urged protesting students to end their hunger strike and demonstrations.

The decision addresses a key demand of the students, who have been agitating for the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) and the establishment of an election schedule. The students’ union at JMI was dissolved two decades ago following incidents of violence and attacks on faculty members, including the then vice-chancellor.

Timeline for Students’ Union and Elections

The JMI administration has outlined a clear timeline for the re-establishment of the students’ union and subsequent elections. The constitution is expected to be finalised by May 15, 2027. Following this, student elections will be conducted in accordance with the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines.

These elections are scheduled to take place within 15 days of the constitution’s final approval. In addition, they are planned to be held within six weeks of the start of the academic session, which is approximately within six weeks from July 16, 2027. This indicates an approximate election timeframe of by August 27, 2027.

Revocation of Disciplinary Actions and Campus Ban

In a significant development, the JMI administration has revoked all ongoing show-cause notices, disciplinary actions, rustication, suspensions, and campus ban orders that were linked to the protest period. This decision aims to de-escalate the ongoing agitation and support a return to normalcy on campus. The latest order explicitly states that the campus-ban will be revoked by the administration.

This move comes after students had refused to end their protest, demanding clear dates for students’ elections. The university had previously extended online classes until November 24, 2026, due to the campus protests, with practical and viva exams for the odd semester also being held online.

Background of Protests and Administration’s Allegations

The JMI campus has been witnessing protests for the last 18 days, driven by student demands for the reinstatement of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) and an election schedule. The students’ union was dissolved twenty years ago following recurring incidents of violence and attacks on teachers, including the then vice-chancellor.

During the current agitation, the JMI administration alleged widespread campus vandalism, including damaged gates and CCTV systems. Similar student agitations for union polls have been launched at other institutions like Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU), where polls have been on hold for three decades.
