KEAM 2026: Kerala HC Allows 3 CBSE Students to Upload Revalued Marks Before Second Allotment
In a major relief for Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) students, the Kerala High Court has intervened in the ongoing Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical (KEAM) 2026 admission process. The High Court has allowed three Class 12 CBSE candidates to upload their updated, revalued board marks onto the official KEAM portal.
This ruling comes as a massive breather for the affected students, who were facing a severe drop in their ranks due to initial evaluation errors by the CBSE.
The Core Issue: Valuation Errors and Delayed Results
The three students—including one residing in the UAE—had approached the Kerala High Court after finding themselves in an unfair position. While they had submitted their initial Class 12 board marks to the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) on time, those marks were deeply flawed.
This year, widespread discrepancies were reported in the initial CBSE Class 12 marking system. The High Court itself noted that the initial evaluation contained multiple technical issues, such as:
-
Swapped answer sheets among candidates
-
Blurry scanned pages caused by a newly introduced digital scanning system
-
Extreme irregularities in data entry
Because of these clear errors, the candidates applied for revaluation. However, the CBSE published their revised, higher marks only after the CEE Kerala had released the final KEAM 2026 rank list on June 27. Under normal rules, the deadline to upload marks on the KEAM portal had already closed on June 23, leaving these students stuck with their older, lower ranks.
State Government’s Argument vs. The Court’s Stance
The Kerala state government initially opposed the students’ petitions. The government argued that the CEE had already extended the marks-uploading deadline twice to accommodate CBSE boards. They contended that since the first phase of seat allotments had already begun on July 8, any sudden changes to the rank list would cause complete chaos in the counseling schedule.
However, the High Court bench strongly disagreed with this rigid approach. The court observed that the delay in publishing the revalued marks was entirely the fault of the CBSE, not the candidates.
“Exceptional circumstances warrant exceptional measures. Though the process of admissions is a laborious task for the authorities, that per se cannot be a ground for compromising merit,” the High Court observed.
Key Takeaways and Terms for the New Orders
To protect the interests of thousands of other candidates who have already participated in the first round of counseling, the High Court has put forward specific conditions:
-
Strict Deadline: The CEE must accept the revalued marks of these three specific petitioners, provided they upload them before the designated cutoff time.
-
No Blanket Re-opening: The court explicitly clarified that this is a one-time exceptional relief. The KEAM portal will not open for any other candidates seeking to update revalued scores.
-
Recasting the Rank List: The CEE Kerala will recalculate and update the rank list using the new standardised marks of these three students before the second round of allotment starts.
-
Impact on Allotments: The affected candidates cannot claim any seats or benefits in the ongoing first round of allotment. Their updated ranks will strictly apply from the second allotment round onward.
What This Means for KEAM 2026 Aspirants
For general candidates, this ruling will not cause any disruption to the current round 1 seat choices or fee payments. Since the state prepares the KEAM rank list by giving 50% weightage to the entrance exam score and 50% weightage to the standardised Class 12 PCM marks, updating these specific scores will only adjust the positions of these three candidates moving into round 2.
The verdict reinforces a critical student-first standard: administrative deadlines cannot override academic merit when a student falls victim to structural errors.
