Maharashtra Class 1 admission age to be six years from 2030-31

In short

  • Maharashtra will implement a minimum age of six years for Class 1 admission starting from the 2030-31 academic year.
  • Revised age criteria for nursery and kindergarten admissions will be phased in from the 2027-28 academic year.
  • Children must complete the prescribed minimum age by June 30 of the relevant academic year.
  • The changes aim to standardize admission rules across various education boards in Maharashtra.
  • Students already enrolled in nursery to Class 1 during the 2026-27 academic year are exempt from these changes.

The Maharashtra School Education Department has issued a government resolution (GR) to revise age criteria for school admissions across the state. From the 2030-31 academic year, children will be required to be a minimum of six years old for admission to Class 1.

This decision, announced today, October 18, 2026, aims to bring uniformity to school admission rules, which previously varied across different education boards, and aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and a communication from the Centre. The revised criteria will be introduced in stages, beginning with the 2027-28 academic year.

Phased Implementation of New Age Criteria

The revised age requirements will be introduced gradually over four academic years, covering admissions for nursery, Junior Kindergarten (KG), Senior KG, and Class 1. Children must complete the prescribed minimum age by June 30 of the relevant academic year.

The new criteria will apply to new admissions, while students already enrolled in nursery to Class 1 during the 2026-27 academic year will be exempt. Similarly, students who have passed the previous class from a recognised school will also be exempt when seeking admission to the next higher class.

Academic Year Class/Stage Minimum Age
2027-28 Nursery or Balvatika-1 3 years
2028-29 Junior KG or Balvatika-2 4 years
2029-30 Senior KG or Balvatika-3 5 years
2030-31 Class 1 6 years

Rationale Behind the Revised Rules

The Maharashtra School Education Department stated that the primary objective of these revised criteria is to establish uniformity in school admission rules. Previously, schools affiliated with different education boards, including the state board, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), and International Baccalaureate (IB), followed varying age cut-off dates for Class 1 admissions. There was also no consistent minimum age requirement for pre-primary classes.

The state government has aligned these revised criteria with the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This alignment also incorporates a communication from the Centre, which recommended that children should be more than six years old for admission to Class 1.

Relaxation and Future Guidelines

School heads will have the authority to grant a relaxation of 15 days in both the minimum and maximum age limits for admissions from nursery to Class 1. This provision offers some flexibility in specific cases.

The Directorate of Primary Education in Pune is handling issuing further instructions and detailed guidelines regarding deploying these revised admission criteria. Parents and educational institutions are advised to monitor official communications from the Directorate for thorough information before making admission decisions under the new schedule.
