NTA Announces NIFT Situation Test Dates for Stage 2

NTA Announces NIFT Situation Test Dates for Stage 2: All You Need to Know

The NTA has confirmed April 26, 2026, as the date for the NIFT Stage 2 Situation Test and Studio Tests. Shortlisted candidates can now download their city intimation slips from the official NTA website to plan their travel ahead of the final selection round.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially set the stage for the final phase of the NIFT 2026 admissions cycle. In a recent notification, the agency announced that the Stage 2 examinations, which include the critical Situation Test for regular B.Des candidates and the Studio Test for NLEA and Artisan applicants, will be conducted across India on April 26, 2026.

This announcement marks a significant milestone for thousands of design aspirants who successfully cleared the Stage 1 Creative Ability Test (CAT) and General Ability Test (GAT) in February. With the written results having been declared on March 20, the focus now shifts to the hands-on practical skills that define the NIFT legacy.

Shortlisted candidates are currently entering a high-pressure preparation phase where their ability to translate abstract ideas into physical 3D forms will determine their future at India’s premier design institute.

Key Dates and Official Schedule

As per the official timeline updated on April 17, 2026, the NTA has accelerated the process by releasing the City Intimation Slips well in advance. This proactive step is designed to assist outstation candidates who may need to travel to regional centers. The main event, the Situation Test, is scheduled to take place in a single shift, requiring candidates to report as early as 9:00 AM for a 10:00 AM start.

Download Your City Intimation Slip

The NTA has made the Advance City Intimation Slip available on the official portal at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee. It is vital to note that this slip is not the Admit Card; its primary purpose is to inform candidates about the city where their test center is located. This allows students to book travel and accommodation in advance, avoiding last-minute logistics hurdles.

To access your slip, navigate to the official website and click on the “NIFT 2026 Stage 2 City Intimation” link. You will need your Application Number and Date of Birth to log in. Once downloaded, verify that your personal details—name, category, and photograph—are correct. If there is any discrepancy, contact the NTA helpdesk immediately at 011-40759000.

Mastering the Situation Test: What to Expect?

For Bachelor of Design (B.Des) candidates, the Situation Test is a unique examination that accounts for 20% of the final weightage. Unlike the CAT, which tests 2D sketching, the Situation Test evaluates 3D space visualization and material manipulation skills.

The Task: 3D Modeling & Write-up

Candidates are provided with a sealed kit containing a variety of materials—such as cardboard, aluminum wire, glaze paper, clay, straws, and fabric. You are given 120 minutes to complete two tasks:

  1. Construct a 3D Model: You must create a model based on one of the given themes (e.g., “A sustainable toy for toddlers” or “A futuristic bus stop”).

  2. The Write-up: A critical component where you must write a concept note (in English) explaining the “why” behind your design, the materials used, and how your model addresses the theme.

Evaluation Criteria

The jury looks for more than just a “pretty” model. You will be graded on:

  • Creative Innovation: How you think outside the box.

  • Material Handling: The dexterity with which you use difficult materials like wire or clay.

  • Structural Stability: Your model should not collapse; it must be a cohesive, standing structure.

  • Neatness: Avoiding excessive use of tape or glue and maintaining clean edges.

Stage 2 for NLEA and Artisan Programs

For those applying through Lateral Entry (NLEA) or the Artisans category, the process is even more rigorous. These candidates must undergo a Studio Test (similar to the Situation Test) in the morning session, followed by a Personal Interview in the afternoon.

The interview focuses on the candidate’s portfolio, their technical knowledge of the craft, and their overall aptitude for the rigorous NIFT curriculum.

Candidates are expected to bring their original documents and any physical portfolio work they wish to showcase to the interview panel.

Final Preparation Tips for Aspirants

Timed Mock Sessions: Practice building a complex model within 90 minutes. This ensures you have 30 minutes left to draft a high-quality write-up.

Focus on Sustainability: Given NIFT’s recent curriculum shift toward eco-conscious design, practicing themes related to “Sustainability” and “Waste Management” is highly recommended.

The “Write” Strategy: Ensure your concept note uses design terminology like ergonomics, aesthetics, and functionality. This shows the examiners that you possess a designer’s mindset.

No Outside Materials: Remember that you cannot use any external tools or materials—practice using only the basics, such as scissors, a cutter, and a ruler.
