AP Literacy Rate Jumps to 82.1%; 100% Target by September 2027 Under ‘Akshara Andhra’

The Andhra Pradesh government, led by Education Minister Nara Lokesh, announced today, September 3, 2026, that the state’s literacy rate has climbed to 82.1%. This marks a substantial increase from 72.6% recorded in 2024, reflecting the impact of the ‘Akshara Andhra’ program. The government has now set an ambitious target to achieve 100% literacy across the state by September 2027.

This accelerated push towards full literacy is a cornerstone of the state’s broader educational reforms, aiming to significantly improve education outcomes for all citizens. The ‘Akshara Andhra’ program, a multi-departmental initiative, has already made 25 lakh people literate in the past year and is central to the strategy for reaching the ambitious 2027 deadline.

Andhra Pradesh Literacy Drive: Progress and Future Targets

Andhra Pradesh’s literacy rate has seen a remarkable 9.5 percentage point increase in just two years, moving from 72.6% in 2024 to 82.1% by September 2026. This progress is largely attributed to the ‘Akshara Andhra’ program, which successfully brought literacy to approximately 25 lakh individuals over the past year. Education Minister Nara Lokesh has now directed School and Intermediate Education officials to intensify efforts to ensure every citizen in the state becomes literate within the next 12 months.

The government’s plan outlines a phased approach to achieve 100% literacy. Officials aim to make another 25 lakh people literate by March 2027. Following this, the remaining 27 lakh individuals are targeted to achieve literacy by the final deadline of September 2027. The ‘Akshara Andhra’ program is being implemented through coordinated efforts involving 11 different government departments to ensure thorough reach and effectiveness.

Addressing Out-Of-School Children and Enhancing Enrolment

Despite significant strides in literacy, the state still faces the challenge of 1,64,821 school-age children who are currently outside the formal education system. In a positive development, approximately 33,000 of these children were successfully enrolled in schools this year, as reported by School Education Director Tameem Ansariya. Efforts are underway to identify and bring the remaining children into the educational fold to ensure universal access to schooling.

Intermediate Education Commissioner Ranjit Basha highlighted an increase of around 10,000 in intermediate admissions compared to last year, indicating growing interest in higher secondary education. To support students, the government provided substantial financial assistance of Rs 1,051 crore under the Thalliki Vandanam scheme to intermediate students this year. This financial aid is crucial in reducing barriers to education and encouraging continued enrolment.

Teacher and Student Attendance, and New Initiatives

Maintaining high standards in the education system, teacher attendance in Andhra Pradesh was reported at an impressive 98.97%. Student attendance also showed a healthy figure of 85.41%, reflecting a committed learning environment in schools across the state. These attendance rates are vital indicators of the overall health and engagement within the education sector.

In a move to support special education needs, the Andhra Pradesh government plans to establish autism centers at 125 locations across the state. This initiative will provide crucial resources and support for children with autism, ensuring inclusive education. In addition, the state will honor 192 best teachers in Vijayawada on September 5, acknowledging their dedication and contributions to the education sector.
