BITS Pilani to offer full scholarships to top 1,000 entrance exam rankers from 2027

In short

  • BITS Pilani will offer full tuition scholarships for four years to students who rank among the top 1,000 in the BITSAT entrance exam, starting in 2027.
  • The scholarship is available to eligible candidates with an annual family income of up to ₹ 20 lakhs.
  • Recipients must maintain a minimum CGPA of 7.5 at their respective campuses to retain the scholarship.
  • The scholarship will be automatically included in the admission offer, eliminating the need for a separate application after joining.
  • This initiative follows a 50% increase in joiners from the top 1,000 BITSAT rankers in 2026.

Birla Institute of Science and Technology (BITS) Pilani has announced that it will offer full scholarships to students who secure a rank among the top 1,000 in its entrance examination, commencing in 2027. This initiative, applicable across all BITS Pilani campuses, aims to enable top performers to choose the institution based on aspiration and opportunity, rather than financial constraints.

The scholarship will cover full tuition fees for all four years of an integrated first-degree undergraduate program (BE, MSc, and BPharma). Eligibility for the scholarship extends to candidates whose annual family income is up to ₹ 20 lakhs, and recipients must maintain a minimum CGPA of 7.5 at their respective campuses to continue receiving the scholarship.

Scholarship Details and Eligibility

The newly announced full scholarship for top 1,000 BITSAT rankers will be embedded directly into the admission offer, removing the requirement for students to apply for it separately after joining. This approach is designed to speed up the process and ensure that financial considerations do not deter high-achieving students from enrolling at BITS Pilani.

BITSAT is a computer-based online entrance examination conducted for admission to integrated first-degree undergraduate programs at BITS Pilani campuses. The scholarship is specifically for eligible candidates meeting the family income criteria and maintaining academic performance post-admission.

Impact of Previous Initiatives and Financial Aid

The decision to expand scholarships follows a positive trend observed in the 2026 academic cycle. According to V Ramgopal Rao, Group Vice Chancellor, BITS Pilani, the number of eligible top-500 rankers who joined BITS Pilani in 2026 increased by 50 percent. The BITSAT score required to be in this top-500 group also rose from 314 to 324 in 2026. Rao further noted that the effect extended beyond the initially targeted group, with eligible students ranked 501 to 1,000 also joining in larger numbers, leading to a 50 percent overall rise in joiners from the top 1,000.

In the academic year 2025-26, BITS Pilani disbursed approximately ₹ 190 crores in scholarships, fee waivers, and fellowships across its First Degree, Higher Degree, and PhD programmes. Of this amount, ₹ 101 crores was allocated to First Degree (undergraduate) students. One in every four undergraduate students across BITS Pilani campuses received financial assistance in 2025-26, through merit, merit-cum-need, and international student scholarships. The ‘Tuition-blind admissions for Top 500 BITSAT rankers’ was an alumni-supported initiative for the 2026-27 academic cycle, which was automatically included in the admission offer for eligible students based on BITSAT rank and family income.

Existing Scholarship Framework

BITS Pilani already provides various scholarship opportunities to subsidize tuition costs, with eligibility dependent on both academic achievements and family economic situation. For instance, a CGPA of 9.0 or higher can secure up to an 80% tuition fee waiver, while students achieving 300+ points in BITSAT can gain access to substantial 75% or greater tuition fee exemptions. High BITSAT scorers also receive reductions in hostel expenses and food service costs.

Beyond merit and need-based aid, BITS Pilani offers scholarships to students whose parents are BITS alumni, defence personnel, and BITS faculty/staff. Fee waivers are also available for students with disabilities or those affected by natural disasters. The institution accepts external scholarships such as the Tata Scholarship, ONGC Scholarship, and Aditya Birla Scholarship. Graduate scholarships for M.Tech, MBA, and PhD programs are also available, with doctoral students receiving stipends and tuition waiver coverage each month, and MBA and M.Tech students qualifying for scholarships based on entrance test results (CAT or GATE) and academic performance.
