Telangana schools, colleges closed tomorrow for Ganesh immersion in Hyderabad, surrounding districts

The Telangana government has declared a holiday for all government offices, schools, and colleges on September 25, 2026, in Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Ranga Reddy, and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts. This holiday is on account of the Ganesh idol immersion procession, which marks the conclusion of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

The official order, issued by the General Administration (Special) Department through a Government Order, specifies that November 14, 2026, a second Saturday, will be observed as a working day to compensate for the September 25 holiday. The decision aims to support the smooth conduct of the large-scale procession and manage expected traffic congestion.

Holiday Declaration and Scope

The holiday on Friday, September 25, 2026, applies to institutions located in and around Hyderabad and Secunderabad, as well as the adjoining Ranga Reddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts. Sanjay Jaju, Chief Secretary to the Government of Telangana, issued the order in the name of the Governor of Telangana. The announcement was published on September 23, 2026, at 07:58 PM, with an ANI update following at 20:29 IST on the same day.

The Telangana High Court has also announced a holiday for itself and courts in and around Hyderabad and Secunderabad for Friday, September 25. To compensate for this, Saturday, December 5, will be a working day for the Telangana High Court. This coordinated measure is intended to maintain public peace and tranquillity during the Ganesh idol immersion proceedings, which are expected to draw a large number of devotees.

Security and Traffic Management

Extensive security and traffic management measures are being implemented for the Ganesh Visarjan procession. The Hyderabad City Police has deployed approximately 20,000 personnel for security arrangements. Immersion of idols commenced on the third day of the festivities, with additional security provisions made for the final procession originating from Balapur.

A detailed ‘bandobast’ strategy is being executed in coordination with various government departments. These include the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSPDCL), and Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB). Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, along with officials from GHMC, Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), and the Roads and Buildings Department, inspected the procession route to ensure preparedness.

Restrictions on Liquor Sales

In conjunction with the holiday and security arrangements, wine shops, toddy shops, and bars attached to restaurants within the limits of the Future City Police Commissionerate will remain closed. This closure will be effective from 6 am on Friday, September 25, until 6 am on Saturday, September 26. Future City Police Commissioner Dr Tarun Joshi, IPS, issued this order for the closure of liquor establishments under Section 20 of the Telangana State Excise Act, 1968, to further ensure public order during the immersion proceedings.
