Telangana schools closed September 25 for Ganesh idol immersion

The Telangana government has declared a holiday for all government offices, schools, and colleges in Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and the adjoining districts of Ranga Reddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri on September 25, 2026. This decision, announced on Wednesday, September 24, 2026, is in observance of the Ganesh idol immersion procession.

The holiday aims to support the smooth conduct of the large-scale Ganesh idol immersion, which will see thousands of Lord Ganesh idols immersed in water bodies across Hyderabad. It is also intended to ease traffic congestion and manage public movement, with quite a few devotees expected to participate in the procession.

Holiday Details and Scope

The holiday on September 25, 2026, applies specifically to government offices, schools, and colleges within Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and the adjacent areas of Ranga Reddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts. The declaration was made by the General Administration (Special) Department through an official Government Order.

Sanjay Jaju, Chief Secretary to the Government of Telangana, issued the notification by order and in the name of the Governor of Telangana. This measure is a standard practice to manage the logistical challenges and public participation associated with the Ganesh idol immersion procession, which marks the culmination of the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities.

Working Day in Lieu

To compensate for the holiday on September 25, 2026, the Telangana government has designated November 14, 2026, as a working day. This decision applies to government offices, schools, and colleges in Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and the adjoining districts of Ranga Reddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri. The General Administration (Special) Department issued an official Government Order regarding this adjustment.

November 14, 2026, typically a non-working second Saturday, will now be observed as a working day in the specified areas. This measure ensures that the total number of working days for these institutions remains consistent despite the holiday declared for the Ganesh idol immersion procession, according to the Telangana government.

Security and Traffic Management

Extensive security and traffic management measures are being implemented for the Ganesh idol immersion procession on September 25, 2026. Approximately 30,000 police personnel will be deployed across Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Their responsibilities include ensuring security, managing crowds, and regulating traffic flow during the event, as reported by the police on Wednesday.

Plus the deployment of personnel, more than 10,000 CCTV cameras will be used for surveillance. These cameras will monitor the immersion procession routes and sites throughout the event. The holiday itself aims to support the smooth conduct of the procession and ease traffic congestion, with a whole lot of devotees expected to participate.
