IGDTUW Narela Campus: Delhi Govt Expands Higher Education with ₹1,300 Cr Hub

The Delhi government is actively working towards establishing a new campus for the Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW) in the proposed Narela education hub. The new campus aims to accommodate a larger number of students pursuing higher education and bolster the higher and technical education landscape in the national capital.

The expansion of IGDTUW, Asia’s first government-run women’s technical university established in 2013, is a cornerstone of the Narela Education City project, which has seen its project outlay increase from ₹500 crore to ₹1,300 crore. This substantial investment underscores the government’s commitment to creating a world-class educational infrastructure spread over nearly 160 acres.

Narela Education City: Expanding Capacity and Infrastructure

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasised the government’s vision during the valedictory ceremony of the induction programme-2026 at IGDTUW, where Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Education Minister Ashish Sood were also present. “We want to make sure that not just 1,000, but a larger number of students from Delhi and across the country can study here,” she stated, highlighting the ambition to significantly expand IGDTUW’s capacity beyond its current intake.

The Narela Education City is envisioned as a shared campus, incorporating global what works in its design and facilities. It will feature common resources such as modern libraries, advanced laboratories, seminar halls, auditoriums, and dedicated research and innovation centres. Also, residential facilities for faculty and staff, including LIG, MIG, HIG, and EWS flats, are planned within the university campuses to create a complete academic environment.

Strategic Land Allotments and Financial Commitments

IGDTUW had previously been allotted 50 acres of land in Narela for its new campus. Further demonstrating progress in the Narela Education City project, possession letters for land parcels measuring approximately 12.69 acres for Delhi Teachers’ University and 22.43 acres for Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University were handed over at Raj Niwas. This multi-university approach aims to create a diverse and integrated educational ecosystem.

Of the increased ₹1,300 crore budget for the Narela Education City, around ₹462 crore (or approximately ₹452 crore) has already been disbursed, with the remaining amount slated for clearance within the current financial year. Universities involved in the project have collectively proposed investments of about ₹567 crore for the construction of flats, hostels, and other essential infrastructure, ensuring solid development across the hub.

Strengthening Technical Education and Women’s Empowerment

Education Minister Ashish Sood, speaking at the IGDTUW event, underscored the life-changing potential of such initiatives for women’s empowerment. “We need to understand what patriarchy is. We cannot smash patriarchy through hashtags. It will be smashed when daughters of IGDTUW sit in front of computer screens and write AI algorithms for India’s security system,” he remarked, highlighting the critical role of technical education in societal change.

The development of the Rithala-Narela Metro corridor, currently underway, is expected to significantly enhance connectivity to the Narela Education City, making it more accessible for students and faculty. This infrastructure development is crucial for the successful implementation and long-term sustainability of the education hub.
