The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) released the admit cards for the Ph.D. Entrance Test for the July 2026 Session on September 25, 2026. Candidates appearing for the examination can download their hall tickets from the official portal, ignou-phd.samarth.edu.in. The entrance test is scheduled for October 11, 2026.
A direct download link for the admit card has also been sent to the registered email addresses of eligible candidates. The application window for the Ph.D. Programme for the July 2026 Session was open from June 10, 2026, to July 1, 2026, with an application fee of Rs. 2000/-.
Ph.D. Programme Structure and Eligibility
The Ph.D. Programme at IGNOU is offered under two categories: Full-Time and Part-Time, in compliance with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022. Coursework classes are mandatory for both categories and will be conducted at IGNOU Headquarters, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi, requiring a minimum of 80% attendance.
The minimum duration for the Ph.D. Programme is three years, with a maximum duration of six years. Women candidates and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) with 40% or more disability are granted an additional two years. IGNOU does not provide hostel facilities for Ph.D. students. Candidates opting for a Part-Time Ph.D. Programme must secure a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer.
Eligibility criteria for the programme include a 1-year/2-semester master’s degree after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree after a 3-year/6-semester bachelor’s degree, with at least 55% marks in aggregate. A relaxation of 5% marks is provided for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) candidates.
Admission Process and Seat Distribution
Admission to the Ph.D. Programme is conducted under four categories: UGC-NET with JRF, UGC-NET (Eligible for Assistant Professor and Ph.D.), UGC-NET (Eligible for Ph.D. only), and University-level Entrance Test followed by an Interview. Interviews are mandatory for candidates under all categories and are held at IGNOU Headquarters, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi.
For candidates who qualify through the University-level Entrance Test, 70% weightage is given to the Entrance Test score and 30% to the Interview/Viva-Voce. Candidates must secure a minimum of 50% marks in the Entrance Test to be eligible for the Interview/Viva-Voce. The list of Ph.D. Entrance Test Exam Centres was published on August 31, 2026, and the last date for submission of examination centre preferences was extended from August 31, 2026, to September 7, 2026.

Steps to Download Admit Card
Candidates for the IGNOU Ph.D. Entrance Test for the July 2026 Session can download their admit cards by visiting the official portal, ignou-phd.samarth.edu.in. Upon reaching the homepage, applicants should locate and click on the login portal. They will then need to enter their correct login credentials, which include a username and password, before clicking the submit button.
After successful login, the Ph.D. entrance test hall ticket will be displayed on the screen. Candidates are advised to carefully verify all details presented on the admit card, such as their name, photograph, and the assigned exam center. Following verification, the admit card can be downloaded as a PDF file, and a clear printout should be taken for use on the examination day, October 11, 2026.
