IIT Kanpur Launches Online Cybersecurity Course in Hindi for Over 3 Lakh College Students

In a major initiative to boost digital safety awareness, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has launched an online cybersecurity vocational programme targeting more than 3 lakh (300,000) students across 570-plus affiliated colleges. Delivered entirely in Hindi, the course aims to bridge the language gap for non-urban students and equip them with essential skills to navigate digital risks safely.

The rollout is backed by a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between C3iHub—IIT Kanpur’s specialized cybersecurity research and innovation center—Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University (DBRAU) in Agra, and the Vivekanand Incubation Foundation (VIF). Present at the MoU signing were key leadership figures, including IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal, DBRAU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ashu Rani, and CSJM University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vinay Kumar Pathak.

Breaking the Language Barrier in Technical Education

Technical subjects like cybersecurity are often taught exclusively in English, creating a steep learning curve for students from semi-urban and rural areas. By offering the complete curriculum in Hindi, IIT Kanpur and its partners are removing language obstacles, allowing learners to master digital security concepts without struggling with a language barrier.

Instead of treating cybersecurity solely as a specialized discipline for engineering majors, the programme frames basic cyber safety as a core life skill for every internet user.

Curriculum and Hands-On Learning Tools

The vocational course focuses on practical, real-world digital hygiene and threat prevention.

Key Learning Modules:

  • Cyber Hygiene & Basic Security: Safe browsing habits, password management, and recognizing common web scams.

  • Social Media & Identity Theft: How to protect personal information from data leaks, impersonation, and online fraud.

  • Safety for Vulnerable Groups: Guidelines focused on protecting women and children from online harassment and cyberstalking.

  • Emerging Threat Awareness: Introductory modules on dark web risks, online financial scams, and cyber terrorism threats.

To go beyond textbook theory, the programme integrates customized virtual labs where students can interact with simulation tools in a controlled environment. Students will also complete regular quizzes, participate in interactive workshops, and submit course feedback to measure their progress.

Key Institutional Roles

Each partner plays a specific role to ensure smooth execution across hundreds of campuses:

Organization Key Responsibilities
C3iHub (IIT Kanpur) Designs the complete curriculum, leverages its academic research expertise, and manages educational delivery.
DBRAU (Agra) Connects its wide network of 570+ affiliated colleges and coordinates student enrollment.
Vivekanand Incubation Foundation (VIF) Manages the technical platform infrastructure and administrative ops needed to scale the course online.

On-Campus Support: Cybersecurity Counselling Cell

To ensure long-term support, DBRAU will establish a dedicated Cybersecurity Counselling Cell (CCC) on campus. This center will serve as a direct resource for students, helping them report online fraud, handle active digital threats, and receive guidance on personal security online.

Speaking at the launch, DBRAU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ashu Rani highlighted that universities carry a clear responsibility to prepare students for the digital reality they face every day. She noted that offering high-quality technical education in Hindi gives students a distinct advantage as they enter the modern workforce.
