The fee adjustment impacts various candidate types, with the fee for students appearing for the first time rising from Rs 710 to Rs 746. This decision comes as the state’s education board continues to set up changes to the examination system and evaluation criteria.

SSLC Exam Schedule and System Changes

While the fees for the Karnataka SSLC exam 2027 have been announced, the Karnataka board has not yet released the official dates for these examinations. Based on previous year trends, SSLC exams are tentatively held in March and April, followed by a second exam in May and June, and a third exam in July. Students will be able to download the Karnataka SSLC exam dates 2027 from the official website, kseab.karnataka.gov.in, once they are published.

The Karnataka education board has been making significant changes to the SSLC examination system, including the elimination of supplementary exams in favor of a system of ‘three annual examinations’ (Exam 1, Exam 2, and Exam 3). For the 2025 SSLC exams, the provisional timetable is expected in December 2024, with the official timetable in January 2025. Model exams are scheduled for February 2025, and admit cards are set for issuance in March 2025. The 2025 exams will be conducted in a traditional pen-and-paper format, with webcasting remaining in place for monitoring all exam centers.

Context of Recent Pass Rates and Proposed Reforms

The fee increase occurs amidst ongoing discussions and reforms concerning SSLC exam pass rates and evaluation systems in Karnataka. The Department of School Education and Literacy is considering providing SSLC exams on demand for private candidates. The Karnataka government has also proposed changes to the SSLC exam evaluation system to revise passing criteria, aiming to reduce student stress and address falling pass rates.

The proposed SSLC pass criteria would lower the minimum marks required per subject from 35% to 30%. In addition, students would need an average of 33% across internal and external assessments to pass, with a total score of at least 206 out of 625. The SSLC pass rate was 83% in 2022-23, which initially dropped to 54% after webcasting was introduced in the 2023-24 exams, before increasing to 74% by awarding grace marks. For the 2024-25 academic year, the first SSLC exam pass percentage rose to 66% despite continued use of the surveillance system, and the state government has confirmed that no grace marks would be awarded for the 2025 SSLC exams.
