NEET PG 2026: Andhra Pradesh Aspirant Dies by Suicide Ahead of Exam

Yashwita, a 26-year-old NEET-PG aspirant from Andhra Pradesh, died by suicide in a private hostel in Hyderabad on Saturday, August 29, 2026. The tragic incident occurred just a day before the NEET-PG 2026 examination, which was scheduled for Sunday, August 30, 2026. Police recovered a suicide note from her room, which indicated she had been suffering from depression since her intermediate education.

This incident adds to a disturbing trend of student suicides linked to high-stakes entrance examinations in India, particularly NEET. The pressure on aspirants, compounded by factors like exam cancellations and re-examinations, continues to raise serious concerns about mental health support within the education system.

NEET PG 2026: Details of the Incident

Yashwita, a native of Kurnool district, had completed her MBBS and was preparing for the NEET-PG examination for seven months while residing in a private hostel near RTC Cross Roads in Hyderabad. Her father had spoken to her on Saturday morning and planned to accompany her to the exam center the following day. However, when she did not answer his subsequent phone calls, he contacted the hostel staff to check on her, if you look at a police official. The staff found her unconscious in her room and immediately shifted her to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead. A case has been registered at Chikkadapally police station.

The purported suicide note recovered from Yashwita’s room stated that she had been suffering from depression since her intermediate education (Classes 11 and 12) and was undergoing treatment and taking medication for the condition. Significantly, the note did not make any mention of the NEET-PG examination, suggesting her long-standing mental health struggles were a primary factor.

NEET Examinations: a Pattern of Suicides and Systemic Pressure

Yashwita’s death is the latest in a series of suicides by NEET aspirants, highlighting the immense pressure and stress associated with these highly competitive medical entrance examinations. Earlier this year, three NEET-UG aspirants died by suicide ahead of the re-examination on June 21, 2026. These incidents followed the voiding of the NEET-UG exam held on May 3, 2026, due to allegations of a paper leak, which led to widespread distress among students.

Among those who died by suicide after the NEET-UG exam cancellation were 19-year-old Anukeerthana from Coimbatore and 19-year-old Renu from Palam, Delhi. Anukeerthana had expressed her fear of retaking the test and the financial burden on her father, stating, “I had taken the NEET exam and was waiting to join medical college, but the exam was cancelled. Now, I am afraid to take the test again. My father has spent a lot of money on me; I do not know how I can ever look him in the face again.” A 23-year-old NEET aspirant, Ria, also died by suicide in Dehradun after the re-examination announcement, leaving a note that simply read, “Mom and Dad, I love you.”

Concerns over Exam Integrity and Student Well-Being

The voiding of the NEET-UG exam on May 3, 2026, by the Indian government on May 12, 2026, due to a paper leak, severely impacted millions of students. Four students who appeared for the voided exam also died by suicide, including 21-year-old Pradeep, who had told his father, “Papa, this time I have become a doctor.” His father, Rajesh Kumar, lamented, “My son … my doctor son … come back. Your books are calling you. What will I do with them now?”

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the NEET exams, faced significant criticism regarding the security and integrity of the examination process. Abhishek Singh, the NTA Director General, had assured students of a secure re-examination, acknowledging, “There are gaps in the system, and we are working to plug them.” However, students like Shrawan Kumar raised pertinent questions about the system’s ability to protect the future of millions, asking, “Can’t they protect one paper that decides the future of millions?” And “How can money and privilege simply bypass years of hard work?” These recurring tragedies show the urgent need for strong mental health support systems and greater accountability in the administration of high-stakes examinations.
