The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, released its admission notification for the academic year 2027-28 on October 9, 2026. Admissions to various programmes will be conducted through the National Law School Admission Test (NLSAT) 2027, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 25, 2027, at various test centres across India.

The notification outlines the application process, eligibility criteria, and examination pattern for courses including the Bachelor of Arts (Honours), three-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB Honours), Master’s Programme in Public Policy (MPP), and PhD programmes. Application forms for these programmes are expected to be released on the official website, nls.ac.in, in November 2026, with the academic session slated to begin on July 1, 2027.
Programmes Offered and Eligibility Criteria
NLSIU Bengaluru will offer admissions to several programmes for the 2027-28 academic year. These include the Bachelor of Arts (Honours), a three-year undergraduate course with an option for an additional fourth year for research, and the three-year LLB (Honours), a postgraduate professional degree open to graduates from all academic streams. The academic structure of the BA (Honours) course encompasses foundational courses, majors, minors, electives, languages, practical courses, and internships.
The Master’s Programme in Public Policy (MPP) is a two-year interdisciplinary programme focusing on public policy, social sciences, and law. PhD programmes are available in Law and in Social Sciences, Humanities and Public Policy. For the 3-year LL.B (Hons.) programme, General Category applicants must have an aggregate of not less than 45% in their Bachelor’s degree, while SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PWD Category applicants require an aggregate of not less than 40%. Proof of completion of the qualifying degree must be submitted by December 31, 2027.
NLSAT 2027 Examination Pattern
The NLSAT 2027 examination for the 3-year LL.B (Hons.) programme will have a duration of 150 minutes and consist of a single question paper divided into two parts. Part A comprises 75 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) for 75 marks, covering Reading and Comprehension, General Awareness, and Critical Reasoning. For Part A, 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong or unanswered question.
Part B, which carries 75 marks, includes subjective questions designed to test Legal Aptitude/Reasoning through problem-based questions and Analytical Ability through an essay. Prior knowledge of law is not expected for NLSAT-LLB Part B. The NLSAT is designed to assess comprehension, critical thinking, analytical abilities, and aptitude for studying law.

Key Dates and Seat Intake
The application portal for NLSAT 2027 will open in November 2026. Candidates interested in the 3-year LL.B (Hons.) programme must submit their applications by 11:59 PM on March 23, 2027. The maximum intake for the 3-year LL.B (Hons.) programme for the Academic Year 2027-28 is 120 seats. The final admissions list for this programme is expected to be published by the end of May 2027.
The academic session for all programmes is scheduled to commence on July 1, 2027. NLSIU launched India’s first 5-year integrated BA LLB (Hons) programme in 1988, and the 3-year LLB (Hons) Programme was launched in 2022.

Reservation Policy for 3-Year Ll.B (Hons.) Programme
NLSIU Bengaluru follows a reservation policy for its 3-year LL.B (Hons.) Programme, ensuring representation for various categories. This includes reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Persons with Disabilities (PWD), and women. In addition, a horizontal reservation is in place for Karnataka students.
