VITEEE 2026 counselling ongoing: understand rank vs branch, fee categories, campus eligibility

Candidates planning to pursue BTech studies at VIT University are currently engaged in the VITEEE 2026 counselling process, which is ongoing as of 24 September 2026. This multi-phase process determines admission to BTech programs across VIT Vellore, VIT Chennai, VIT Bhopal, and VIT Amravati campuses based on a candidate’s VITEEE rank and the chosen fee category.

The admission framework at VIT University differs from other engineering entrance exams, as it does not release official rank or cutoff data for specific courses. Instead, the counselling process, which began with result declaration, is structured around five categories representing different fee tiers and rank brackets, with tuition fees increasing from Category 1 (lowest) to Category 5 (highest).

VITEEE Counselling Structure and Eligibility

VITEEE counselling is conducted in phases, determined by rank categories, with VIT Vellore scheduled to conduct five phases for each rank category. The VITEEE 2027 dates for admission counselling will be notified on the official website and the VIT OTBS portal. Choice filling must be done based on the candidate’s obtained rank, and candidates must select categories in numerical order, as skipping categories is not permitted.

Eligibility for campuses varies significantly by rank. Only candidates with a rank up to 1 lakh are eligible for all campuses, including VIT Vellore and VIT Chennai. Those with ranks between 1 lakh and 1.5 lakhs can apply to VIT Bhopal and VIT Amravati, while ranks above 1.5 lakhs are exclusively eligible for the Amravati campus. VITEEE does not follow traditional government-mandated reservations for OBC, SC, or ST categories.

Fee Structure and Refund Policy

The VITEEE admission process involves a non-refundable counselling registration fee of INR 5,900. Tuition fees for BTech programs range from approximately ₹2 lakhs per year for Category 1 to ₹5 lakhs per year for Category 5. The category assigned during counselling directly impacts the tuition fee, with higher ranks generally corresponding to lower fee categories.

According to UGC regulations, if a student withdraws before the specified deadline, typically September 30, their full academic fee is refunded. However, hostel and mess fees are subject to pro-rata deductions if accommodation services were used before the withdrawal. Candidates must confirm admission by paying the VIT tuition fee once a seat is allotted.

Expected Rank vs Branch and Campus Preferences

Computer Science Engineering (CSE) is the most preferred course among candidates, followed by Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), and Civil Engineering (CE). Competition for popular branches like CSE and AI is increasing annually, with many top-ranking students securing a VIT seat as a backup while awaiting IIT, NIT, or state counselling results.

For VIT Vellore, expected Category 1 closing ranks for CSE are around 660, while for Civil Engineering, they extend to 19,500. At VIT Chennai, Category 1 closing ranks for CSE are around 3,300. Candidates with higher ranks will typically need to opt for higher fee categories (Category 4 and 5) to secure core branches, especially at the Vellore and Chennai campuses.

Scholarships and Exam Details

VIT offers scholarships under the “GV School Development Programme” for top VITEEE rank holders. These scholarships include a 100% tuition fee waiver for ranks 1-10, a 75% waiver for ranks 11-50, and a 50% waiver for ranks 51-100. JEE Main scores are not accepted for VIT admissions; candidates must appear for VITEEE.

The VITEEE exam is an online computer-based test, 2 hours 30 minutes long, with 125 questions. Each correct answer is awarded +1 mark, and there is no negative marking for wrong answers. PCM students typically opt for engineering branches like CSE and ECE, while PCB students are eligible for courses such as Biotechnology.
