Seva First Innovation Challenge registration opens; apply by October 24

Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi launched the website and registration portal for the Seva First Innovation Challenge (SFIC) today, September 25, 2026, at IISc Bengaluru. The initiative aims to encourage young people to identify community problems and develop practical solutions.

The Seva First Innovation Challenge is a joint effort by the Ministry of Education, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the University Grants Commission (UGC). IISc Bengaluru serves as the nodal institute for the challenge, which is open to students from various educational institutions across five states and three Union Territories.

Challenge Objectives and Themes

The Seva First Innovation Challenge seeks to motivate students and young innovators to pinpoint issues within their communities and devise practical solutions. Minister Joshi addressed students, young innovators, faculty members, startups, and industry representatives during the launch event, emphasising the importance of connecting ‘Seva’ (service) with innovation to address real-world challenges.

The challenge will focus on five broad themes:

• Clean and Sustainable Bharat
• Prosperous Farmers, Prosperous Bharat
• Healthy and Inclusive Bharat
• Educated and Skilled Bharat
• Secure Bharat

Registration and Key Dates

The registration portal for the Seva First Innovation Challenge opened today, September 25, 2026. Students interested in participating have approximately one month to register, with the deadline set for October 24, 2026. The national finale of the challenge is scheduled to take place in New Delhi in December.

Strengthening the Innovation Ecosystem

The Seva First Innovation Challenge builds upon existing efforts to strengthen India’s innovation ecosystem. These initiatives include the establishment of over 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs and more than 17,300 Institutions Innovation Councils, alongside programmes such as the Smart India Hackathon.

During the launch, Minister Joshi called upon startups and industry partners to mentor young innovators. He urged them to help promising ideas transition from prototypes to real-world solutions, thereby contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. This aligns with recent efforts such as the GCC Conclave on Innovation 2026 in Bengaluru, which focused on deepening collaboration between Global Capability Centres, startups, and India’s innovation ecosystem, including initiatives like the Atal Acceleration Centres for Scale-up of Startups (AACESS).
