Andhra Pradesh government raises age limit for non-uniform jobs to 44 years

The Andhra Pradesh government has raised the upper age limit for direct recruitment to non-uniform services from 42 to 44 years, extending this relaxation until September 30, 2027. This decision, enacted through G.O. Ms. No. 187, comes ahead of the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) opening applications for 892 posts, including 163 Group-I positions, on October 6, 2026.

Also, the government extended the existing two-year age relaxation for uniformed services by another year, also valid until September 30, 2027, through G.O. Ms. No. 188. These measures follow numerous representations from job aspirants, routed via the APPSC, who sought relief due to prolonged gaps in recruitment processes.

Reasons for Age Relaxation and Impact on Aspirants

The government’s decision to relax age limits stems from persistent delays and gaps in recruitment cycles, a concern highlighted by APPSC member Parige Sudheer. Government Orders addressing recruitment stagnation, backlog vacancies, administrative delays, and incomplete recruitment processes have been issued periodically since 2016. The general upper age limit for government recruitments has been enhanced from 34 years to 44 years over time, with concessions extended periodically since 2016.

The coalition government’s job calendar, issued on March 19, 2026, proposed 41 recruitment notifications covering 10,060 posts. Aspirants argued that the benefits of this calendar could only be fully realised with corresponding age concessions. Gaddam Venu Madhav, a 43-and-a-half-year-old Group-II job aspirant from Guntur, is among those who will benefit from the latest relaxation. He stated, “This is my only chance to realise my dream of securing a government job. I’ll give it my best shot.” However, Regalla Srinivasa Rao, 47, also from Guntur, remains ineligible for the current relaxation.

Recruitment Schedule and Vacancies

The APPSC is scheduled to open applications for 892 posts on October 6, 2026. This includes 163 Group-I posts, for which applications will be accepted from October 6 to October 27. The remaining 729 vacancies will accept applications from October 16 to November 5.

Since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, Group-I recruitment has been notified four times, and Group-II recruitment three times. The 163 Group-I vacancies include 11 Deputy Collectors and 36 Deputy Superintendents of Police (Civil). Other significant vacancies incorporate Assistant Commissioners in Tax Services (14 posts) and Divisional Development Officers (35 posts).

Uniformed Services and Age Limits

While the age relaxation for non-uniform services has been extended, aspirants for uniformed services had sought a higher upper age limit of 35 years for the 2026 recruitment notifications. Shaik Sultan, 34, an SI aspirant from Anaparthi, expressed disappointment, stating, “I had hoped that the Government would provide a one-time relaxation and raise the upper age limit to 35 years for the 2026 recruitment. That has not happened.”

The prescribed age limits for various uniformed posts, reckoned as on July 1, 2026, remain distinct. For instance, the age limit for Deputy Superintendent of Police (Civil), Category-II, is 21 to 30 years, while for Deputy Superintendent of Jails (Men), it is 18 to 30 years. In comparison, several uniformed services in Telangana have an upper age limit of 35 years, and the Union Public Service Commission’s Civil Services Examination has an age band of 21 to 32 years.
