Management aspirants considering higher education in 2026 face a choice between the Common Admission Test (CAT) and the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Both examinations assess English Language, Quantitative Ability, and Logical Reasoning skills, but they serve different purposes and have distinct administrative and structural characteristics.

The CAT is primarily designed for admission to Indian business schools, while the GMAT is largely for admission to foreign universities, though some Indian institutions also accept GMAT scores for specific programs. Understanding these differences is crucial for candidates to align their preparation with their academic goals.

Exam Administration and Scheduling

The CAT is conducted by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) once a year. For 2026, the application window is scheduled to open in the first week of August, with the exam set for November 29, 2026. The exam is held in online mode for two hours, across two slots on the scheduled date. Candidates can take the CAT once a year, with no upper limit on the number of lifetime attempts.

In contrast, the GMAT is conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) and is available throughout the year. Aspirants can book an exam slot at their convenience. Candidates are permitted to re-take the GMAT five times within a 12-month period, with a maximum of eight attempts allowed in a lifetime. The GMAT can be taken either at a test centre or online from home.

Exam Pattern and Scoring

The CAT 2026 exam consists of 66 questions across three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QA). Each section has a fixed duration of 40 minutes, and sections must be attempted in a fixed order. The CAT uses a fixed marks-based system with negative marking for Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs): +3 marks for a correct MCQ, -1 mark for a wrong MCQ, and 0 marks for unattempted questions. For TITA (Type In The Answer) questions, a correct answer yields +3 marks with no negative marking.

The GMAT Focus Edition, launched in 2023, replaced the older GMAT format by removing the Analytical Writing Assessment and Sentence Correction. It comprises 64 questions across three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. Each section has a duration of 45 minutes, and candidates can choose the order in which they wish to answer them. The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test with no negative marking. It also allows candidates to change a maximum of three answers per section using a bookmark and review feature, a facility not available in the CAT. Approximately 3.29 lakh applicants took the CAT in 2024, while about 1.15 lakh applicants globally take the GMAT per year.
