XAT 2026 generally tougher than CAT: know differences and similarities

MBA aspirants across India are currently evaluating the differences and similarities between the Common Admission Test (CAT) and the Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) as they prepare for admissions to top business schools. While both are national-level MBA entrance examinations, XAT is generally considered to be tougher than CAT, according to a comparison of difficulty levels, exam patterns, and preparation strategies.

The choice between these two prominent exams often depends on individual strengths, career goals, and the specific B-schools targeted by candidates. Both CAT and XAT test core aptitude in Verbal, Quantitative, and Reasoning skills, but they diverge significantly in structure, time management, and the inclusion of unique sections.

Key Differences in Exam Structure and Duration

The CAT exam, conducted annually by one of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), has a duration of 2 hours (120 minutes) and is divided into three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). Each section has a sectional time limit of 40 minutes. For CAT 2026, there are 68 questions, with 24 in VARC, 22 in DILR, and 22 in QA.

In contrast, the XAT exam, conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur, has a longer duration of approximately 3 hours (180 minutes). It features four sections: Verbal & Logical Ability (VALR), Decision Making (DM), Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation (QA & DI), and General Knowledge (GK). XAT does not impose sectional time limits for Part 1 (VALR, DM, QADI), which has an overall time limit of 175 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for Part 2 (GK). XAT 2026 includes 95 questions, comprising 25 in VALR, 21 in DM, 28 in QA&DI, and 20 in GK.

Marking Schemes and Unique Sections

The marking scheme for CAT awards +3 marks for each correct answer and deducts -1 mark for incorrect Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), with no negative marking for Type In The Answer (TITA) questions. The total marks for CAT 2026 are 204.

XAT’s marking scheme provides +1 mark for each correct answer and deducts -0.25 for incorrect answers. A penalty of -0.10 is applied for leaving more than 8 questions unattempted. However, there is no negative marking for the General Knowledge section. The General Knowledge section in XAT does not influence the XAT percentile but is considered during the final selection process by XLRI and other participating institutes. The Decision Making section is a unique component of the XAT exam, distinguishing it from CAT.

Important Dates and Syllabus Overlap for 2026 Exams

For the 2026 examination cycle, CAT registration opened on August 1, 2026, and closed on September 13, 2026. The CAT 2026 admit card is scheduled for release on November 5, 2026, with the exam date set for November 30, 2026. XAT 2026 registration commenced earlier on July 10, 2026, and will close on December 5, 2026. The XAT 2026 admit card is tentatively scheduled for release on December 20, 2026, and the exam will be held on January 4, 2026.

Despite the differences in structure and marking, approximately 70% of the core syllabus for CAT and XAT overlaps, covering fundamental aptitude areas. The essay writing section has been removed from the main XAT exam paper but may be evaluated during the XLRI Personal Interview (PI) round.

Accepting Institutes and Application Deadlines

CAT scores are accepted by 21 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and over 1000 other B-Schools across India. Prominent institutes accepting XAT scores include XLRI Jamshedpur, XIMB, IMT Ghaziabad, TAPMI, and GIM, along with over 160 other B-Schools. Aspirants should note that the CAT 2026 registration period has already concluded, while XAT 2026 registration remains open until December 5, 2026.
